No “skin in the game”, no vote? – The Wandering Hedgehog
https://thewanderinghedgehog.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/no-skin-in-the-game-no-vote
No “skin in the game”, no vote? Ian Cowie of the Daily Telegraph wrote a post yesterday arguing for “a tax-based alternative to the Alternative Vote”. Basically, this would involve limiting the franchise to those who pay at least 100 of income tax each year, while excluding those “large numbers of people who have no ‘skin in the game’ and who may even comprise the majority of voters in some metropolitan areas today”. Pensioners and mothers (even single mothers, Mr Cowie? Public services are easily remove...

andy's five: July 2007
http://andys5.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html
Explorations in a pentagonal world . Friday, July 13, 2007. Went to a Sydney Theatre Company function last night and it was a case of spot the celebrity/VIP. I'm going to engage in some unashamed name dropping, but given the "five" theme of my blog I'll limit myself to just that number! 1 Andrew Upton (unfortunately his more famous wife, none other than Cate Blanchett, failed to turn up! 2 Nick Greiner and Kathryn Greiner - I'm sneaking two names in under the one family! 4 Andrew Hansen of The Chaser.

The weblog of an obscure physicist. Wednesday, May 05, 2010. Justin Paulette attempts special relativity, with mixed results. I try not to talk about these things too often, but Stephen Hawking, speaking loosely and probably after knocking back one-too-many, has publicly suggested. Yet this is not due to a traveler having stepped outside a "stream" of time and reinserting himself in an extant, "future" age. Time is simply the observation of material entropy and the extinction of potential possibilities (...

The weblog of an obscure physicist. Tuesday, January 12, 2010. The monopoles OF DEATH. Q Are physicists trying to keep transgressive papers off the arXiv by blacklisting heterodox researchers? A Not nearly hard enough. Whilst readers are encouraged to enjoy the whole thing, p. 829-832 contains Section III B (entitled "Even worse than destroying the earth"), which has brightened up my evening no end. I assume this is the "brilliant review" of which the AEI's Dr. Kevin Hassett. Speaks so highly of here.

The weblog of an obscure physicist. Tuesday, July 28, 2009. I do not find this persuasive . How quaint that the Conservative party is planning to punish naughty children by taking away their mobiles. Labour is proving much more hardline: taking away the educational futures of tens of thousands of British teenagers, who will be denied university places this autumn. It is almost reverse ageism - the young being bumped out of their rightful places so that universities can be employed as higher education cat...

The weblog of an obscure physicist. Saturday, June 18, 2011. But I bring other, different, problems. An alternative to irradiating food, of course, would be to irradiate the manure instead. That, after all, is the source of the bacteria, and as the contact with radiation would be further removed from the food, you wouldn't have the either the Nuclear Dread associated with food irradiation, nor (perhaps? Would you have to mark the food as irradiated. Posted by Political Scientist. Alternate Seat of TYR.

Saving your ass since 1999. Comment is free, but woo is sacred. On November 15, 2011. So the Freeman on the Land movement seems pretty marginal. All that stuff about choosing whether statutes apply to you, and how debt isn’t real because they capitalised your name. Everyone with a functioning brain can see that it’s nutty woo, right? Well, it turns out that the Guardian has an open mind on these issues. At any rate, they’ve given a Comment Is Free platform. So, some facts:. After a time, creditors do wri...

O God, help us to remember that all good things come from you. Keep us from turning the many material blessings that you have given us into curses by relying on them instead of on you. Grant that our material blessings bring glory to you and to the good of others. Immediately we start to protest: “What about al...
