Melanie's Perennials: Plant of the year - Geranium cantabrigense

http://melaniesperennials.blogspot.com/2014/12/plant-of-year-geranium-cantabrigense.html

Sunday, December 28, 2014. Plant of the year - Geranium cantabrigense. 2014 was a tough year for gardening. With a new garden location, much of it was spent in removing plant material. The new plants introduced to the garden had little time to settle in. I found it hard to decide what to buy, so many plants that I've had in the past and wanted once again but there's only so much room and so much money. What was your favorite plant this year? I do so love to read your comments! Much as I wish I also had t...

Melanie's Perennials: May 2010

http://melaniesperennials.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 28, 2010. This afternoon I have a play date. Some garden friends are coming by with their children and we are going to split and replant the Sempervivum (Hens and Chicks). We'll be selecting all the pots that are chock full, pulling the plants apart and giving them homes in new pots with room for those little chicks to spread out. One non-succulent that I've had wonderful success with is Allium senescens glaucum which is the blue flat leaf foliage in the top corner of this trough. It was ...

Melanie's Perennials: December 2009

http://melaniesperennials.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 1, 2009. One of my favorite photos is this one, taken in July of 2008 at the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hannover Germany. It was so far away from home and yet, at the same time, the gardens felt as if they could have been right here on Long Island. In the center left of the photo is a large stand of Kniphofia, more commonly known as red hot pokers. While these plants are quite popular in England (and possibly Germany), they seem to be ignored by gardeners here in the USA. The same goes for...

Melanie's Perennials: March 2010

http://melaniesperennials.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Hellebores - The Lenten Rose. One of my constant goals is to give the botanical name along with a nickname in parenthesis. While the nickname of this plant is Lenten Rose, I do believe that many gardeners also know the botanical name of Hellebore. Lenten Rose though is a pretty apt description for this wonderful perennial as it most certainly does begin blooming during Lent (that is, it does so here on Long Island in my zone 6b garden). One of the reasons I heard for the down-t...

Melanie's Perennials: March 2012

http://melaniesperennials.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 21, 2012. One of the fun things about moving to a home with an established garden is discovering new things. Many of them I knew about before coming here even if I never grew them. This grass is familiar to me but I have no real idea what it is. A Carex? It looks like this year round and you can see the little spent bloom heads from last season. Believe it or not, in all my years of gardening I've never had pachysandra! Love to hear your suggestions about my mystery plant! The time to be...

Old Country Gardens.A Long Island woman's passion for gardening. Tuesday, July 20, 2010. This spring my friend Beth gave me some beans in trade for a cow. Actually, Beth gave me two bean plants. She explained to me that these beans have been handed down generation after generation and came from Thomas Jefferson's garden. I'm pretty sure they are Hyacinth beans. Hopefully you can see the structure here and how the beans began to grow up the copper pipe. Here you can see the collection of pots, the stick-f...

Old Country Gardens.A Long Island woman's passion for gardening. Monday, June 14, 2010. I'm always touting foliage, foliage color and foliage shape. Of course the truth is it's the flower that most often takes our breath away. Blooms come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, colors and textures. When choosing a plant for a particular spot, the texture of the bloom can be very important. Right next to the Thalictrum is a large clump of Filipendula. Another wonderful fluffy bloom, just about to burst open an...

Old Country Gardens.A Long Island woman's passion for gardening. Wednesday, June 09, 2010. This past weekend I had the opportunity to watch my neighbors working on a great garden project. Cynthia is one of those fearless do-it-yourself ladies, ready to tackle anything. Well, this time she's decided to tackle quite a big project, a concrete walkway. Doing and she jumped right in to the concrete making business. 24 hours later the cement is hard enough that you can walk on it without making a mark. I can't...

http://melaniesoldcountrygarden.blogspot.com/2015/01/photos-through-years.html

Old Country Gardens.A Long Island woman's passion for gardening. Sunday, January 04, 2015. Photo's through the years. Today I added up a few photos and found that in 2008 I took 1,656 garden related photos. 2009 was a banner year with 2,498 photos. 2010 was the last year I had my big garden, I was working at that time but I still managed to take 799 photos. Today's post will take you back through those years with a focus on what I want now for our new garden. One small garden we haven't begun clearing ye...

As promised, here's some images of my new little cottage in Centerport, New York (north shore of Long Island, between Huntington and Northport). We have a corner lot. Since each house on my street has only 2 homes, I guess we all have corner lots! Here's the other side along with the little side yard. Upstairs is a single room my dau...

Old Country Gardens.A Long Island woman's passion for gardening. Saturday, June 26, 2010. If there's anybody on this planet that's more talented then my friend Gianna at designing container arrangements, I have yet to meet them. Gianna is the Queen, hands down, best container designer ever. Anybody who lives on Long Island is lucky, you can go to Main Street Nursery in Huntington village and pick her brain any time. While I'm familiar with most of the plant material (I'm just more of a perennial gardener...

Old Country Gardens.A Long Island woman's passion for gardening. Monday, February 23, 2015. What could be better on a cold winter night than to go through photos of lush gardens? It's a fridgid 14 degrees outside but this topic is doing it's best to warm me up. If you are lucky enough to to stop and park your car, all you need to do is take a peek through the bars and you'll find yourself transported to another world. One of the first gardens you will walk through are very formal beds but the plant mater...

Old Country Gardens.A Long Island woman's passion for gardening. Sunday, December 28, 2014. In a nutshell - 2014. With the year coming to a close I find myself looking through the photos I've taken this past year. Although I haven't been posting, it doesn't mean I haven't been gardening. Those of you who know me will recognize that the location of my garden has changed again. This time I think I'm really home. Encourages me to make changes. By June the plants filled in well enough. Maybe it's silly b...
