DomesticPolitix: A trip to Bunnings to buy a backyard bunker or the Sarah Connor Chronicles of bushfire warfare

Friday, February 13, 2009. A trip to Bunnings to buy a backyard bunker or the Sarah Connor Chronicles of bushfire warfare. DH went to a local fire meeting up here in the Melbourne Dandenongs and came back armed with new information for our fire plan. So we sat down and went over the plan again last night. We realise now that we had not read the CFA “living in the bush” info kit closely enough. Nor had we taken the threat of bushfire quite seriously enough. We’ll need an extensive sprinkler system o...

DomesticPolitix: March 2009
http://domesticpolitix.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 5, 2009. Bushfire evacuees, glorious hospitality and dodgy supervisors. During the bushfire season so far this year, we have left home on three occasions when a fire was in our suburb or in the suburb next door. On each occassion our very good friends have managed to put us up at short notice. All 11 heartbeats of us. If I haven't mentioned it before, we live in a "wildfire zone" in the Yarra Ranges, and rather than that being an abstract concept, we now understand what it means. In our c...

Half formed opinions on whatever takes my fancy: parenting, renovating, politics, design, cooking, gardening, pets, etc. Tuesday, February 24, 2009. Put the following in a big bowl:. 4 cups of rice bubbles. 3 tbsp of cocoa. 1 cup pf icing sugar. Mix dry ingredients then add:. Melted 180 g of copha (the copha packet has a chocci crackles recipe and recommends you use the full 250g, but I reckon this is way too much and makes a solid, teeth breaking choccie crackle). Friday, February 13, 2009. What we now ...

offthecuffstuff: 1st birthday parties, upsy daisy cakes and non mumsy-mums.

Half formed opinions on whatever takes my fancy: parenting, renovating, politics, design, cooking, gardening, pets, etc. Monday, February 9, 2009. 1st birthday parties, upsy daisy cakes and non mumsy-mums. I am the most non-mumsy mum I know. While my friends in mothers' group were all planning and looking forward to our first 'fruit of our loins' one year old birthdays, I seriously couldn't be bothered. No, it's more than that: I would rather put my hand in a blender than organise a 1st birthday party.

Half formed opinions on whatever takes my fancy: parenting, renovating, politics, design, cooking, gardening, pets, etc. Monday, August 24, 2009. We've taken the leap. We've committed ourselves to living here; not somewhere else on realestate.com.au, though I continue to scan that site obsessively just-in-case we've made the wrong decision. Perhaps I have some disease whose main symptom seems to be indecisiveness. but that's a whole different blog. We've decided that a 1979 bathroom just ain't cutting it...

A trip to Bunnings to buy a backyard bunker or the Sarah Connor Chronicles of bushfire warfare. So while we’ll attempt to leave early, we now realise we have to have everything ready to go in case we can’t get out of here in time. This scares me so much that I have to joke around a little… but I’ll get to that. We’ll need at least 4 or 5 outside taps as...

DomesticPolitix: 11 heartbeats seek shelter
http://domesticpolitix.blogspot.com/2009/02/11-heartbeats-seek-shelter.html
Friday, February 20, 2009. 11 heartbeats seek shelter. On Sunday afternoon our menagerie increased by 4. We picked up chooks and were putting the finishing touches on the chook shed when we heard the Upwey, Tecoma and Upper Ferntree Gully CFA Fire sirens ring. It was hot and blustery: bad bush fire weather. Not sure why Upwey residents weren't named in the alert given the proximity to the fire. Our good friends who took us in that night didn't know what they were getting themselves in for! Paradoxical be...
