Fiction and non-fiction books. Ship of Fools / Unto Leviathan by Richard Paul Russo. 17 September, 2013. I don’t know why exactly, but this book always haunts me. It’s one of the few novels I like to re-read, and I’m currently on my fourth go at it. Here be spoilers,. By the way. So read no further if you want to read the book in innocence. Russo is not as well-known (nor as prolific) as the likes of Stephen Baxter. Or Robert Charles Wilson. But there’s something about this particular book. Has followed ...

Those are the words you’ll hear frequently in connection with the Nebula/Hugo-nominated. The Goblin Emperor,. Katherine Addison’s novel of court intrigue against the steampunk backdrop of a fantasy kingdom of goblins and elves. (Which immediately puts me in mind of Woody Allen’s ‘ The Ransom Note. Why the fantasy backdrop? Jason Isbell – Something More Than...

Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free – Frequently Arsed Questions
https://frequentlyarsed.wordpress.com/2015/07/20/jason-isbell-something-more-than-free
Fiction and non-fiction books. Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free. 20 July, 2015. 20 July, 2015. After catching on – late, thanks, iTunes – to Jason Isbell’s Southeastern. I pre-ordered his 2015 offering Something More Than Free. It’s pretty much more of the same good stuff possibly an even better collection of tunes. Isbell has a pleasant, gruff voice, and sings with an oddly affecting deadpan that allows his lyrics to shine through the song arrangements. Are you living the life you chose? College ...

RFM – Frequently Arsed Questions

Fiction and non-fiction books. 24 August, 2016. 24 August, 2016. Uprooted by Naomi Novik. This Nebula award winning novel was published in 2015 and has the benefit of being (so far at least) a standalone book and not part of a series. I’m on record. As not being the biggest fan of the fantasy genre, though I clearly like it more than, say, someone who never reads any. But I picked this up because it won the award an I’m glad I did. Which means this book had to overcome a lot of prejudice to win me over.

Fiction and non-fiction books. 17 July, 2015. The BBC’s online complaints form makes you jump through a lot of hoops before you get to actually complain, but here’s what I submitted. Wrong channel, wrong time. Why were the proms not interrupted? Or better still, why not put the golf on the red button and let the middle class white male audience find it there? The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu – Review – Frequently Arsed Questions

Fiction and non-fiction books. The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu – Review. 8 August, 2015. 8 August, 2015. The hyphen in the title is important, of course. Without it, you could be forgiven for thinking of this as some kind of thriller. In which a killer. Has the problem of disposing of three bodies. The hyphenated title refers to the problem of calculating the chaotic orbits and relative positions of three massive objects or bodies (stars, actually) in space. It’s an alien invasion story, though you w...

Partial review, in which I gave the opinion that even though I’d only heard half of the album (the pre-released tracks), The Blade. Was set to be the best album of 2015. Now I’ve had the whole thing for a week or so, I’m just as firm in that opinion. I still find the modern release cycle annoying, but at least The Blade. The three hookiest tracks of The Blade. Which features a similar rhythm s...
