MELTON HALL is a Regency villa built in 1807 by John Wood senior, a distinguished local lawyer. The Woods had lived on the site since the 16. John Wood snr., 1766-1856. The house was built to replace an earlier one destroyed by fire. The present building, “New” Melton Hall, summer 1908. The Woods remained here till 1936, and only four other families have lived here since.
