North Tyneside is a Metropolitan Borough that lies in the North East of England. It is bordered by the River Tyne to the south, the North Sea to the east, the county of Northumberland to the north and the city of Newcastle upon Tyne to the west. It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merging of the County Borough of Tynemouth, the Boroughs of Wallsend and Whitley Bay, Longbenton Urban District and the Backworth, Earsdon and Shiremoor Wards of Seaton Valley Urban District.
