Empathic Rationalist: May 2015
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 30, 2015. Time to Stop Denying. Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil and Bulgaria have recognized it, but not Belarus. Arizona, Alaska and Arkansas have recognized it, but not Alabama. Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland have recognized it. Hell, even Syria recently joined their ranks. In total, it has been officially recognized by 28 countries and 44 of the 50 United States of America. But most importantly, it has never been recognized by Turkey. Genocide is a serious charge, one that is not made lightly.

Empathic Rationalist: A Prayer
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2014/07/a-prayer.html
Monday, July 21, 2014. I wrote the following prayer and delivered it at the Interfaith Iftar held at the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington, D.C. on Friday, July 19th. I hope it speaks to you. People,” and every Muslim will look at a man with a yarmulke and say “And that is a Son of Ibrahim,. Adonai, may we honor you with our hearts, with our minds, and above all, with our conduct. Empathic Rationalist: The Ugly American
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-ugly-american.html
Saturday, August 01, 2015. I offer that prologue to assure you that I have not lost my self-respect. But it remains the case that what I learned about myself earlier this week wasn’t pretty. My lesson began by reading this article. So this is a story of man-kills-animal. Stories like that happen every day, right? I’m with you, Palmer, at least to a degree. If it’s OK to kill animals for food, why isn’t it OK to kill them for “sport”? It’s not like we need to eat animals in order to enjoy nutritious...

Empathic Rationalist: A Prayer
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-prayer.html
Sunday, July 12, 2015. Adonai, we in this room represent many traditions, and yet there is so much that unites us. We seek knowledge. We thirst for universal prosperity and liberty. And we care deeply about our youth, both for their own sake and for that of the future. Yet, when I take stock in this world at the dawn of a new millennium, what do I see? That in the most affluent and educated communities – and especially among their youth – the interest in You is fading. I see You as a commander. May we ha...

Empathic Rationalist: August 2014
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 22, 2014. Strangely enough, I am actually leaving the friendly confines of the Washington, D.C. area this weekend and will not have time to post. The Empathic Rationalist will return again on Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Links to this post. Saturday, August 16, 2014. Bethesda, Maryland is, apparently, a long way from Ferguson, Missouri. We don’t have military style police departments. We don’t have gaping racial divides. We don’t have any visible signs of poverty. It...

Empathic Rationalist: Snakes in the NFL
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2015/07/snakes-in-nfl.html
Saturday, July 25, 2015. Snakes in the NFL. From the moment I heard about the death of Ken “the Snake” Stabler on July 8. How great was Stabler in his prime? So why don’t I just leave it at that? Like many of his fans, I am proud of Stabler for making that choice. And this weekend, only a fortnight after his death, the importance of this choice has been highlighted by yet another development involving the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I dont know. I guess nobody ever will. An American tragedy. Mary Lois, I ...

Empathic Rationalist: Reflections on the 4th of July
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2015/07/reflections-on-4th-of-july.html
Saturday, July 04, 2015. Reflections on the 4th of July. I’ve had the opportunity over the years to deliver a number of Unitarian-Universalist (UU) church sermons, but last Sunday was the first time I’ve ever been asked to deliver a talk targeted especially for children. My talk went along fine enough as I explained that “Jews” and “Muslims” were truly first cousins in the family of Abraham. That is, until I mentioned the holiday of Ramadan. In other words, I told the kids at the UU church, millions of M...

Empathic Rationalist: June 2015
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 27, 2015. There are many responsibilities to being an Empathic Rationalist. You must listen to your voice of reason and honor what you hear. You must tell the truth – both to others and, just as importantly, to yourself. You must love the search for wisdom as much or more as the possession of knowledge. You must open your mind, even when it’s unpleasant to do so. And that’s just the “Rationalism” part. You must keep your heart humble and your hands hospitable. It’s a time to celebrat...

Empathic Rationalist: January 2015
http://empathicrationalist.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 24, 2015. The NFL season appears to be finishing pretty much the way it started – awash in scandal. The season effectively began with a decision by the Commissioner’s office to turn a blind eye to evidence that one of the world’s best running backs knocked out his fiancée in an elevator. That, on top of everything else that was going on in the NFL, was enough to cause me to boycott the sport for most of the season. But nobody is talking about that comeback. We also know that the Patriot...
