The Megaliths of Carnac. Stone Circles / Cromlechs / Enclosures. Cromlechs, also called stone circles or enclosures, are quite rare in Brittany. Some are circular but most are oval or barrel-shaped. Rarely, they are quadrilateral. The stones are often placed close beside each other, hence the name enclosure. At least 4 cromlechs were associated with the alignments at Carnac. The Megaliths of Carnac. Alignments are rows of standing stones (menhirs), ranging from one row of a few stones to several rows of hundreds of stones. The most famous are the four alignments at Carnac: Le Menec, Kermario, Kerlescan and Le Petit Menec (from west to east). But not far away, at Kerzerho and at Ste. The Megaliths of Carnac. Scattered throughout the landscape around the town of Carnac on the south coast of Brittany, France are hundreds of megalithic sites. The word megalith comes from the Greek for big (megas) stone (lithos). Neolithic people living in the Carnac region began building these megaliths around 5000 BC and continued for the next 2000 years. But why did they build them? A Thom and A.S. The Megaliths of Carnac. Tumuli are large man-made mounds often covering one or more passage and/or coffin graves. The stones of the graves are often engraved. The shape of the mounds ranges from circular to long barrows. The map below shows the location of tumuli in the Carnac/Gulf of Morbihan region. About 125 metres long by 50 m wide by 10 m high barrow. Menhir on top (behind chapel) may have been placed there recently. 1 passage grave and several other coffin tombs. 25 meter diameter circular mound.
