The tales of a ramblin' woman. Baking an Apple Pie in a Moven. Movens are Japan's solution for the oven shortage. Personally, I would think that in a cold and damp country that does not believe in insulation OR central heating, having ovens come standard in the kitchen would be a no-brainer. You can bake delicious things AND be warm. But no, instead, we have movens. What is a moven you ask? A moven is like the confused love-child of a microwave and a convection oven. Is it a microwave? Yes Is it an oven?

The tales of a ramblin' woman. 30 cm and still falling. 1 - my bus stop. 2 - the combini next to my bus stop. After getting off at my bus stop and wading through drifts that skimmed the very tops of my size 12 rainboots, I can say that, with every fiber of my being, I am a believer. And it is still coming down! I'm not sure what is it about the gigantic layer of crystallized water outside that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but who am I to question warmth, imagined or otherwise? Leaves from the...

The tales of a ramblin' woman. Washing Machine Wars and Wajima Photos. Photos from the last night of the Wajima Tai Sai, the children's night! This should not suggest that there was no carrying of heavy things and no burning of big stuff, or even that there was no carrying of the big burning stuff, there were just more kids around. One of the dueling teenage kiriko teams. Senmaida - 1,000 rice paddies. The smallest one has just 6 bunches of rice. In Japan, even the road work signs can't help but bow.

The tales of a ramblin' woman. My cousin Cara is gone. She was 16. Last Saturday night, in the wake of a thunderstorm and under a rainbow, she left. Those who love her know that the grief of losing someone so precious is tempered by the knowledge that she has finally found peace. A friend once told me that the Japanese love sakura. These are for you, Cara. With love, forever and ever,. Links to this post. Photos courtesy of Heather and Suzie. At Oyama Jinja in Kanazawa. The cheapest tea kettle: $300.

The tales of a ramblin' woman. I think these photos all speak for themselves. All photos thanks to my fab iPhone, which, unlike my digital camera, has survived several near-fatal accidents with grace and determination. Drawn by students on the chalkboard outside the nurse's office. Links to this post. Labels: Crunky Ball Nude. Let's just pretend that didn't happen. On the island of Awaji, November 2010. Perhaps you will recall this summer's tournament in Nagano. Well, we didn't). We pulled it together an...

The tales of a ramblin' woman. Land of milk and hummus. Beth moved to Lebanon and has a blog called land of milk and hummus. Links to this post. Yes, it has been 2 weeks and all you get is a garden update. Too bad. The rest of the family trip, a visit to Seoul, an epic journey to New Zealand, and a recent visit from two of my favorite people will have to wait because my garden is glorious. Do you know how tomatoes smell? That it would have been substantially easier to install before. The cilantro sprang ...

The tales of a ramblin' woman. Is that weird for you? Another JET asked yesterday. No? No, actually, it's not. What seems weirder is that, for the past year and a half, I have been working in a public junior high school in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan and haphazardly going about the business of being a 20-something while trying not to get into too many disasters. And that's what I want to make the most of before my time runs out. Watch scantily clad obese men grapple with each other for nine HOURS? Leaves f...

The tales of a ramblin' woman. The Philippines: part 2. Day 6 - Wednesday, August 10th. Day 7 - Thursday, August 11th. Underground river is interesting, full of birds rather than bats, and smells extraordinarily bad. We return and take advantage of the happy hour and beach lounge chairs at the Frenchmen's swanky resort and make friends with the staff who seem to like us more after we confess that we are actually staying in the shacks next door. Day 8 - Friday, August 12th. After two hours crammed in a je...
