Pantograph carbon and overhead line conductors. This test machine is capable of replicating the speed and load of the contact between an overhead line conductor and the pantograph contact strip. Rapid testing is undertaken, simulating a year of traffic in around 1 hour of machine time. Contact speeds up to 125mph (200kph) are available. SUROS – Sheffield Rolling Sliding twin disc facility. Jon joined the group in 2012 after successfully completing his degree in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. His work has focused on trajectory planning in multi-train systems, primarily seeking to maximise punctuality and minimise energy consumption. Boundary element modelling of rail defects. Boundary Element modelling is conducted using the BEASY modelling package, and the specialist fracture analysis code FRANC3D. These packages have been used extensively by the group to investigate rail rolling contact fatigue cracking. Bespoke software for modelling of rail defects & maintenance. LS-Dyna to model the effect of blast loads on train bodies. WheelBASE – rail and wheel wear database.
