Teacher's Grants and Scholarships. The Mercer County Conservation District owns four no-till seed drills which are leased at a low rate to the county farmers. These drill sowed 1,600 acres this year. As a result of this program approximately 85% of all cropland in Mercer County is no-tilled. The district maintains two Broyhill sprayers that are loaned to farmers for the control of musk thistle, which continues to be a problem in the county. The District has a Whitfield Tree Setter. Scholarship is awarded each year for $750.00 which is renewable for four years if grades are maintained. Major must relate to agricultural. Four are on scholarship now. Ashley Hazelwood, a junior at UK, Kendra Horn, a sophomore at UK, Brady Core, a freshman at Lexington Community College and Levi Henderson, a freshman at UK. Applications are available at the office in March of each year. The district has a stop at Environmental Day for 300-5th graders at Anderson Dean Park in May of each year.
