How do I lower my cholesterol with diet? More important than the total cholesterol is your ratio of HDL to your total cholesterol. This is often included on your blood work report. Simply divide the total cholesterol by the HDL. An answer or ratio of 4.5 or less shows you have less risk of heart disease. So flavor your diet with healthy fats. Buy fish (not farmed), meats (grass fed), butter (organic), vegetable oils (cold pressed, organic), olive oil (extra virgin), even minimally processed leaf lard.
