First day as a resident intern. July 1. That is the day that all new residents start their intern year, fresh off of medical school graduation. It is a terrifying day. It is nice feeling like the nurses are on your side and you are a team, instead of just a nuisance. It is also suuuuper nice to be able to write orders finally, although the learning curve for that with the computer system and dosages still seems like a mountain. I will get it. I will improve. It is great to be back in the hospital!

I just had dinner with Pauline Chen (author of the book “ Final Exam: A Surgeon’s Reflections on Mortality. But I can’t remember the exact symptoms of crohn’s disease…. At the end of your life…. Yesterday we had a full day of Palliative Care STUFF. Lectures, small group sessions and discussions, and even “trigger” cases with standardized patients where we fumbled our way awkwardly through mock situations where we had to deliver bad news to a patient actor.
