Who’da thought that would be such a peaceful and calming thing? I wish I didn’t have 37 books on my bedside table or I might go to a bookstore and browse aimlessly for a bit and make some impulse buys. But I will restrain myself as I am determined to stay on a budget. I am actually looking forward to going home, alone, and spending a hour on my taxes!

February 18, 2010. Understanding WellPoint: why ginormous rate increases are inevitable in our current health care system. Only one thing shocks me about WellPoint’s 38 percent rate hike to health insurance policyholders: I ’m shocked that people are shocked by it. The fact that WellPoint raised premium rates that much all at once? Why can’t we see that everyone has a dog in this hunt? Good luck finding coverage after that happens. Personally, we’ve never been brave enough to play ball in this ...In any ...

January 30, 2010. A divine lunar lesson unfolds. The woman next to me overheard our conversation and quietly asked, “What did you say your name is? 8220;Crystal,” I answered. 8220;Do you know who I am? 8221; she asked. Who is Brenda and why does she matter to me? Brenda was responsible for helping me get a job as an undergraduate assistant when I had no qualifications or skills. How could she see any potential in someone who was so incompetent and naïve? Where did she find the patience to train me? She w...

http://leadingreads.blogspot.com/2011/10/elegance-of-hedgehog.html
October 8, 2011. The Elegance of the Hedgehog. In the course of a reader’s life, there are so few books one can afford to read more than once. The Elegance of the Hedgehog earns its way into a rare class of stories that makes you want to turn the book over and start again as soon as you’re finished. What makes it so? Is it worse to live behind a self-constructed façade or to build one for someone else? Madame Michel’s remarkable substance permits her to retain her dignity and her humanity, despite ...

LeadingReads: A Must Read for Readers
http://leadingreads.blogspot.com/2011/07/tolstoy-and-purple-chair-my-year-of.html
July 18, 2011. A Must Read for Readers. Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading. My rating: 5 of 5 stars. If, as Mark Twain once said, a person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t, then surely a person who remains unchanged by what they read is just as disadvantaged. In her memoir, Tolstoy and the Purple Chair. Author Nina Sankovitch proves how much a thoughtful reader can milk out of a good book, sharing her experience of reading one book a day for a whole year. There was...
