Mike Jackson's Paddling Journal. A journal of my sea kayak trips. Friday, July 03, 2015. June 28 - July 2 Gwaii Hanaas (#s 58-61). While I was working on MV Swell as a naturalist in Gwaii Hanaas, I managed to get out for 4 short paddles in one of their cute little Delta 10s. We had amazing weather and conditions throughout the trip and it was great to putter about in our anchorages in the kayaks.Looking forward to Alaska and the North Coast in August. Overview, click to enlarge. 7 km, YTD 517 km.

Mike Jackson's Paddling Journal. A journal of my sea kayak trips. Sunday, May 24, 2015. May 23rd - Breton Islands (#47). I estimate that I paddled 1 km in total, but decided not to count it! In the afternoon I went for a paddle over to the Breton Islands with Andrew and Alan. The main (south) Breton island has a very nice campsite. I also saw several the Ochre sea stars ( Pisaster sp. Which have virtually disappeared around Victoria. 10 km, YTD 394 km. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). May 5th - Towing...

Mike Jackson's Paddling Journal. A journal of my sea kayak trips. Thursday, June 18, 2015. June 14, 2015 - Angel Island (#56). I met up with two very nice Bay Area paddlers, Jackie and Diane, for a paddle from Sausalito around Angel Island. I rented a kayak and gear from Sea Trek Kayak and SUP. After my paddle, I took a tour around the "Bay Model" which is a 2 acre scale model of the waters of the SF Bay area made by the Corps of Engineers to study water movement in the bay. 17 km, YTD 503 km. Haro Strai...

Mike Jackson's Paddling Journal. A journal of my sea kayak trips. Saturday, May 30, 2015. May 30th - Discovery Island (#49). Dan, George and I went for a morning paddle out to the islands. There was a steady 10-15 kt SW wind which made things more interesting. Nice sunny morning and a good paddle. By the time we returned, there was a solid ebb. 15 km, YTD 410 km. Links to this post. May 29th - kaboat test (#48). I took the new Kaboat 396. 1 km, YTD 395 km. Links to this post. Sunday, May 24, 2015. I went...

Mike Jackson's Paddling Journal. A journal of my sea kayak trips. Tuesday, August 04, 2015. August 4th - Cadboro Bay (#68). I went out for a short evening paddle with Monica. There was a stiff 10-15 kt SW wind blowing so we hugged the SW shore of the bay and only went as far as "islet 7". The Caddy Bay sailors were out and it looked like they were having a great evening. It was nice to sneak out for a quick paddle in between fishing trips and heading of to Alaska on Thursday. 4 km, YTD 550 km. If you wan...

The Adventures of Natural C-lection. Saturday, February 14, 2015. Feb 14th - Haro Strait (#39). Monica and I went out south of Discovery Island to try for Halibut. We tried anchoring in two different spots, but only managed to catch some dogfish! Conditions were good and it was good to show Monica how the boat operates for hali fishing. Anchor retrieval worked well. Friday, February 13, 2015. February 1st - Haro Strait (#38). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Mike Jackson's Paddling Journal.

Sunday, August 31, 2014. Bunsby's 2014 (Part 3 July 18th - 21st). Welcome back to the last installment of our Bunsby 2014 blog! There's lots to tell you about so let's get started. A dramatic change in the weather from the day before. Looks like rain is coming. This should keep us dry and there's plenty of space for the group to huddle together. Somewhere in the distance is the village of Kyuquot. Navigating would be done 'old school' today. Arriving at Kyuquot - the First Nations village came into view ...

Friday, July 31, 2015. God's Pocket - 7 Days plus 1 (Part 2). Day 2 - July 12, 2015. The 5:00am headache woke me up with a bit of a jolt. just great! Robyn and I pulled on our rain gear and neoprene boots (must have) and headed to the kitchen to fire up the Jetboil. Gearing up ready to explore Balaclava Island. Heading north into Browning Passage as the flood was just beginning. So close . close enough for me. My first encounter with a humpback whale. Darkness envelops me as I explore the cave. After our...

Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Developing Our Skills with Paddle Canada (Part 1). Flashback to our first time in a kayak - September 2011. Notice the upside down paddle . we need skills huh? Since then, our garage has been constantly evolving with kayak gear upgrades and we have spent a lot of time "in" the water as we upgraded our skills certifications through Paddle Canada. This past year especially our focus has been to reach our personal goals which we were both able to do in April. I have taken courses wi...

Sunday, August 2, 2015. Double Day - James Island and Butchart Gardens Fireworks by Robyn Byrne. Earlier this year Mark and I committed the August 1st long weekend to helping our friend Gary lead a SISKA. Paddle to see the Butchart Gardens. Fireworks so it was a stay-at-home weekend for a change. We decided to kick it off by doing a bit of fishing and crabbing yesterday morning. Getting ready to launch off Lochside Drive with the Anacortes ferry arriving into Sidney BC. By this time we were ready for lun...
Gecko Paddler: God's Pocket - 7 Days plus 1 (Part 3)
http://geckopaddler.blogspot.com/2015/08/gods-pocket-7-days-plus-1-part-3.html
Wednesday, August 5, 2015. God's Pocket - 7 Days plus 1 (Part 3). Day 3 - Monday July 13, 2015. The easy way to wash breakfast dishes. We decided to head back towards camp taking our time to explore the forest while being protected from the rain by the canopy of the trees. Although we could hear the rain, very little made it's way to the forest floor other than the large droplets that fell from the canopy boughs high above us. Harvested many years ago, a stump of a very large cedar looks out of place.
The Adventures of Natural C-lection: March 2015
http://naturalc-lection.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
The Adventures of Natural C-lection. Sunday, March 1, 2015. March 1st - Coyote Bank (#40). Dan, Jon and I went for a Halibut fishing trip to Coyote/border bank. The forecast was good, with little wind. We basically headed due south from Oak Bay after dropping our crab taps and spent the morning bouncing the bottom in search of a halibut bit. No nibbles! But a great morning on the water, with the boat and gear working well. I think we were as close as 200 m from the border at times!

Sunday, April 27, 2014. 2014 West Coast Paddler Unofficial Camp Out. It wasn't an official event. Just a bunch of kayakers who follow the forums on West Coast Paddler. And get together once a year for a camp out. We met up with Gary Jacek at the Swartz Bay Government Dock at 14:30 last Thursday afternoon and loaded the provisions into our trusty rides for the crossing to Portland Island. The marine forecast? Under sail with Gary doing 2.2 knots with full left rudder. Our original plan was to pass the nor...

Five tips to scale up agility. We had a really great session with our customers on how to increase the agility of our organizations. We see many organizations in our country adopting Scrum or Kanban at an IT level. In reality however we also see that it is difficult to scale up agility to the corporate level and yet this is where the true value lies. Posted 4 years ago. Agile Is Dead (Long Live Agility) - PragDave. Great post by one of the founding fathers of the Agile Manifesto on 13 years of Agility.

mhjourneyblog | "To Thine Own Self Be True" William Shakespeare
To Thine Own Self Be True William Shakespeare. August 6, 2015. Some more of what I learned. July 27, 2015. This year has been quite a learning lesson, or maybe an eye opener. I’m almost 100% sure those around me haven’t changed, I just became more aware. You know the old saying regarding lessons, they just keep coming in different form until we get it. Well I’m pleased to announce I get it, at least some of it. I learned that it was my decision to care take and that I did it to feel needed, and abandoned...

Mike Jackson's Paddling Journal. A journal of my sea kayak trips. Friday, April 06, 2018. April 6th - Cattle Point (#21). I decided to go for a quick paddle while the power was out and I could not work! I had a fairly relaxed paddle out to the cattle point marker and back. On my way, I checked out the sunken sailboat, my mooring buoy and my C-dory in the yacht club. I saw courting mergansers as well as a bunch of Canada geese who looked like they were about to nest. Links to this post. We really liked th...
