Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life: Gratitude and Wellbeing
http://anthropologicalobservations.blogspot.com/2014/12/gratitude-and-wellbeing.html
Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life. Monday, December 29, 2014. I heard psychologist Dacher Keltner, a founder of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley. On the radio this morning calling for more gratitude as a counterweight to the materialism of the season. The work of Keltner and others has shown that gratitude is closely associated with health and overall wellbeing. There is a lot of subjective value in anticipation, as an article in the Atlantic highlights.

http://savageminds.org/2015/05/09/around-the-web-digest-week-of-may-3
Notes and Queries in Anthropology. Around the Web Digest: Week of May 3. May 9, 2015. Hola chicos y chicas! Next week instead of the weekly digest I’ll be sending you all a “Wish You Were Here” postcard from the Yucatán. As always, you can bring blogs to my attention at rebecca.nelson.jacobs@gmail.com . I didn’t have the energy this week to try to find more four-field posts but here’s one on Cahokia at Anthropology.net: Megafloods and the Collapse of Cahokia. This Somatosphere post takes an interesting a...

http://anthropologicalobservations.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-good-life-page-99-test.html
Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. The Good Life: Page 99 Test. The Page 99 Test blog takes its cue from Ford Madox Ford, who remarked "Open the book to page ninety-nine and read, and the quality of the whole will be revealed to you.". I was asked to apply the Page 99 Test to my new book, The Good Life: Aspiration, Dignity, and the Anthropology of Wellbeing. Posted by Ted Fischer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life: High-end Coffee and Maya Farmers in Guatemala
http://anthropologicalobservations.blogspot.com/2013/05/high-end-coffee-and-maya-farmers-in.html
Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life. Tuesday, May 14, 2013. High-end Coffee and Maya Farmers in Guatemala. The entire lot was only 8 pounds, but the benchmark New York commodity price at the time was just about $170 per hundredweight, meaning that the El Injerto mocha sold for almost 300 times the going rate for washed arabicas. Are his coffees worth $6.60 a cup wholesale (and FOB Huehuetenango, Guatemala)? At the same time the Coffee Rust fungus threatens large port...

Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life: Third Wave Coffee: How your gourmet coffee habit affects the livelihoods of producers
http://anthropologicalobservations.blogspot.com/2015/01/third-wave-coffee-how-your-gourmet.html
Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life. Friday, March 13, 2015. Third Wave Coffee: How your gourmet coffee habit affects the livelihoods of producers. Americans are drinking much less coffee than they did in the 1940s and 1950s — down by almost half from a peak in 1946. And such changing trends in Northern countries have profound impacts in the global South where coffee is produced. Posted by Ted Fischer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://anthropologicalobservations.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-happiness-paradox-of-latin-america.html
Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life. Monday, March 30, 2015. The Happiness Paradox of Latin America. Paraguay can't catch a break. It is where a 19th century war wiped out half the male population; one of the poorest and most unequal countries in the hemisphere; 60 years of military dictatorship and one party rule, a brief interlude from which ended (kangaroo court style) in 2012. And it is landlocked. This is partly explained through adaptation to circumstances - ou...

http://anthropologicalobservations.blogspot.com/2015/01/is-western-civilizationa-bubble-what.html
Anthropological Observations . . . on economics, politics, and daily life. Thursday, January 8, 2015. Is Western civilization a bubble? What can we learn from the collapse of ancient societies? Arthur Demarest, professor of archaeology at Vanderbilt and a student of the collapse of civilizations, says that in looking at our own society: "we are in trouble.". World 'attitude'— seems to me to be the only way out of the 21st century giant and precarious 'bubble' that now is. Posted by Ted Fischer.
