The rough utilitarian nature of the Buddhist caves is no less incredible than the more refined and whimsical Hindu temple. Both are filled with a kind of deep resounding echo of inconceivable patience and labor and a low bass vibration of unfathomable age. How is it possible, are the only words that come to mind. So far in two weeks there have been two full-fledged holidays and more are coming in the few days before I leave. India loves fireworks. Every store is packed with boxes and boxes of firecrackers. Saturday, December 09, 2006. Since it took me two full weeks to write my last entry, I thought I’d try to get a head start on writing about winter, which has certainly gotten a head start in coming. Last Thursday morning when I got into Shafiq’s car I saw that there was snow on the mountains above Kabul. Seeing as it was still 5 days until December I triumphantly pointed it out even before Shafiq could say his usual peace about the morning coldness. Shafiq’s response? I shouted, But why aren’t you here?

Sunday, November 05, 2006. I left the store. I returned to Kabul late on Thursday afternoon, a very uneventful trip. Shaheen was there waiting for me at the outer gate of the airport. It was the last day of Eid (the holiday at the end of Ramazan) and the dusty, unpaved streets of Kabul were completely empty. It was absolutely lovely. The life of a Family of Six. Monday, August 13, 2012. As Morgan reached one, the cardiologists started talking surgery. Because the holes were not closing, surgery was almost certain. In April he referred us to one of the surgeons from CHLA, whom we met with a month later. He said we could schedule the surgery anytime, so we decided sooner or later would be better and the summer was the best time for me to help with her recovery. Morgan had her surgery July 6th and it went great! The night before bath.
