Friday, January 13, 2017. I was born there, but I'll die here." A depressing comment on the face of it, but actually just a matter-of-fact statement. He then transitioned into talking about the house he built here for his growing family, those children now grown. A journey begun many years before in a distant land had led him to Broward County, making us neighbors. I asked him to send a postcard. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. BusTropical: Hearts express
http://www.bustropical.com/2017/01/hearts-express.html
Sunday, January 15, 2017. You might hear. With all those differences it is tempting to think of our premium passengers as being polar opposites from our local route regulars (e.g., Cold/Warm, White collar/Blue collar, Highly educated/Poorly educated). So on a day when I had a trainee in my charge, Life boarded the bus and taught me a lesson, reminding me those differences are an illusion. Trip, but one she would have used the next day. Also, the new pick starts today! The variety pack this time around is...

BusTropical: October 2016

Saturday, October 29, 2016. We do our own stunts. Sunday morning on the 60, a bus stop on 31st Ave in Collier City. The thin lady sporting a black cowgirl hat stood out as unique in that place. The sunglasses made sense, but the skateboard didn't quite fit. The assuming type might notice that the Cheetah was one stop away and figure there's a connection post-Saturday night. You do stunts on that? One of my go-to intros when I see a board. It's a stunt just being here.". Friday, October 28, 2016. At first...

BusTropical: March 2016
http://www.bustropical.com/2016_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 30, 2016. There seems to be a certain comfort level for passengers on the 50 that other routes take longer to reach. Over here on the poor side of town we have plenty of spirit and life in us yet. The daily grind doesn't have to grind us into the asphalt. I try to get the 50 every pick. This time around I drive it twice a week as the second piece of a split shift, the first piece being an express run to the Civic Center/Health District. On one trip in the middle of the shift, a familiar ...

BusTropical: November 2016

Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Spring time Saturdays in Broward County, what could be better. Cool temps, still too cool to roll up my sleeves. The rising sun has turned Oakland Park Blvd. into a street of gold. Yellow tabs in bloom. Ibis pecking for grubs. The light is clear and golden. A guy in a Piney Grove Baptist shirt, glasses, and snaggle teeth. On his way there now for a health fair. A friend goes there, I ask if he knows him. Yes, he does. How's it goin' out there? BusTropical: Ways to stop
http://www.bustropical.com/2017/01/ways-to-stop.html
Thursday, January 12, 2017. At Sunrise we pick up Mr. Mercedes. Like usual. He's something of a master painter and has repainted his bike since the last time. Now it is a glossy bright green, and still decked out with Mercedes hood ornaments on the front and rear splash guards. Shortly into the trip he comes back up and shows me picture online he finds funny. Thanks for the laughs! And I don't miss an opportunity to make an announcement. A young man up front forgot to signal his stop and we passed it.

BusTropical: May 2016

Tuesday, May 31, 2016. The street came in at noontime. Hey bus driver, can I ask a question? Is it ok to bring tools on the bus? What kind of tools? As long as there are no exposed blades or anything that can hurt another passenger if they bump into it, it should be ok," was my tentative answer. Oh, it's a tamper and some asphalt. I got a job to patch up a parking lot.". You must keep busy, there's no shortage of potholes out there," I commented. Sunday, May 29, 2016. I blurted out as a greeting. A q...

BusTropical: June 2016

Thursday, June 30, 2016. On another trip a Haitian woman with a bike boarded. She stood up front near me, had a habit of talking to the air mostly in Creole, and wore her bike helmet the whole trip. Her English was heavily accented which made it difficult to understand, but I'm pretty sure as she exited she wished me life and love. At the Central Terminal I bumped into Gemini, a bus fan I hadn't seen for awhile. I love. Do constellations know they're connected without being connected? It was barely after...

Thursday, July 28, 2016. Which way the wind blows. It was my last trip one early afternoon on the 72. We were westbound approaching the stop before Powerline. As we serviced the stop, a cyclist came out of nowhere on the sidewalk and hit the brakes. He motioned to me that he was boarding and proceeded to stow his bike on the rack. I can't believe I caught you! Whoa, catch your breath! I didn't see you back there, were you trying to catch the bus? Wednesday, July 27, 2016. It was an early morning run on t...

BusTropical: April 2016

Wednesday, April 27, 2016. Other times the smell is not from smoke, but simple exposure to whatever especially strong strain is being rolled that day. A cursory walk-through of the bus at the end of the day reveals the evidence: the unused tobacco contents of a cigarillo in a small pile beneath a seat. Tuesday, April 26, 2016. In with the new. I quit smoking 8 weeks ago after smoking 43 years, started when I was 8 or 9. I promised my mom on her deathbed that I'd quit.". Sometimes it's just time to move on.
