The DJY Chess Blog: Is it just a waste of time?

The DJY Chess Blog. Growing pains of a chess amateur. Monday, 26 December 2016. Is it just a waste of time? The reader might have noticed the dearth of games for Wallington lately. My experiences as captain last season didn't make it any harder to take a step back, but we also took voluntary relegation owing to a loss of members, and above all I've become fed up with playing on weeknights. This game shows why. All of eight months ago! That's why I'm in two minds about playing the Botvinnik; I still have ...

The DJY Chess Blog: Forcing the pace
http://djychess.blogspot.com/2017/01/forcing-pace.html
The DJY Chess Blog. Growing pains of a chess amateur. Wednesday, 4 January 2017. I certainly wouldn't have been able to guess my second-round opponent before the tournament - I had black against Conor Murphy (207/1995). A strong junior from Kent in my early days, he had long since vanished into the obscurity of occasional league games - in fact he hadn't played much since helping to end my last match for Sutton Grammar in disappointment. Looking back, I clearly wasn't happy! Nevertheless, there he was.

Westcountry Chess Blog: British Championships

Monday, 2 August 2010. Apologies for the long delay from my last postings. I've been a little busy trying to organise the Jonathan Latham Memorial Congress. Now that that's up and running I can get back to the important busy of reporting on south- west chess. Firstly, the week 1 rapidplay. Millfield pupil Rhys Cummings was jointly- leading the field after 4 rounds, with a perfect score. Sadly losses in the last 2 rounds saw him finish in a tie for 8th place. Nevertheless, he managed 198 grading- ...In th...

Wednesday, 31 March 2010. Tiverton 2 Teignmouth 2 (Schofield Cup). Simultaneously with the Mamhead match against Newton Abbot, the Tiverton Schofield team were home aginst Teignmouth at Blundell's School on Saturday March 27th. Towards the end of the game on board 3, superficially it looked as though Stephen Thorpe-Tracey, with 3 pawns for the exchange, was doing well against Kevin Hindum. But eventually the pawns fell and the rook proved too strong for the knight. Jon Duckham on board 1 for Tiverton dev...

Westcountry Chess Blog: April 2010

Friday, 30 April 2010. This coming weekend sees the final 3 rounds of the 4ncl taking place at Sunningdale for Div's 1 and 2, and Wokefield Park for Div 3. Both are just outside Reading for anyone not sure where Sunningdale and Wokefield Park are (I can't say I knew before I first played there). The title to this post links to a summary I did just after the previous 4ncl weekend of how the south- west based teams are doing, and how they could potentially be doing after the final 3 rounds are concluded.

The DJY Chess Blog. Growing pains of a chess amateur. Saturday, 30 January 2016. A December league match in London isn't something to look forward to, especially as a captain. Normally I'd say that it's especially unappetising when the opponents are one of the strongest teams in the division - but I'll make an exception for Kingston 1, for Wallington have a ridiculous run of upset wins against them. And 17. Bg6? Friday, 29 January 2016. Glad to be gone. Over the last few years, I suffered an appalling ru...

Russian chess news and interviews in English. Karpov and the stolen manuscript. July 7, 2010. Ormer World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov is engaged in a fierce battle for the FIDE Presidency, but in a recent interview. He told Alexander Kochetkov of “Novye Izvestia” of a tribulation that befell him in the somewhat less cut-throat world of stamp collecting. And mentioned the same top 5 on Russian TV. Finally, it’s worth adding that when it comes to stamps the newspaper notes that by some estimations ...
