Se ubica a los pies del volcán Imbabura y a su costado izquierdo el río Tahuando. Está a 70 kilómetros (43 millas) al noroeste de la capital del Ecuador, Quito. Hoy día, Ibarra es una ciudad mercado muy popular con los turistas. Tiene un clima ameno, casas blancas de estilo colonial (dándole el nombre de La Ciudad Blanca), y calles empedradas.
