This time, after we crossed the suspension bridge, we stayed alert for a trail to the right, which we hoped would enable us to ascend to the peak of the moraine and get past the the unstable end moraine and the creek coming out of Gulkana – success! We were looking for a short hike while staying a few days at Pine Grove Campground near Lake Mary (which is near Flagstaff, AZ). So we checked out our maps and discovered that there was a trail head for the Arizona Trail on a nearby forest road. The surprise for the day was that it was a fabulous area for birding. This is the place where we really felt like we had accomplished some of our goals for this trip. If we could choose just one place to spend an entire summer in Alaska, this would probably be it.
