Painted Furniture and Objects. Time as an apprentice. Coffin maker in Ghana. The Suture Series came about in part from Michael de Forest's interest in making forms out of segments. Up to this point all his work had been furniture and related functional wood objects. This new work allows him to make three dimensional hollow wood human forms that are cut into segments, and then stitched back together to make it three dimensional again. In another variation of the suture series Michael de Forest developed a new constructive method of creating new forms from individual, discrete pieces made somewhat at random and then assembled. He used a clay sculpture of a torso, that was fragmented to make molds for the shapes that make up the collection of vessels you see here. The pieces in this series are made of individual blocks stacked and fastened together with screws, an additive process. The exterior was then carved, a subtractive process, into a life-size bust, unscrewed, taken apart, the interiors cut out, holes drilled, painted, sanded and sewn back together.
