Kids, Uncorporated: January 2011

http://www.michiganpete.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Too Late for Resolutions? I've got a new responsibility at co-op: running the canteen/concession stand/yearbook-fundraiser snack counter. Seems pretty simple so far - the hardest part is lugging everything upstairs for lunch on a REALLY SQUEAKY cart. I think every teacher along the back hallway stuck their head out to see who was making such a racket! Number one: we need to get a schedule. Scheduling leads in to #2: meal planning. As well as getting meals in the kids. Tiffany's tried a couple times t...

Kids, Uncorporated: Previewing the Uncorporated Garden 2011

http://www.michiganpete.blogspot.com/2011/03/previewing-uncorporated-garden-2011.html

Previewing the Uncorporated Garden 2011. I will never again take for granted having a piece of land in which to grow food. Discussions of health, convenience, and food security. Aside, it's just plain fun to go out and dig in the dirt. And if I'm going to dig in the dirt (sorry - the soil. I might as well get something productive out of it beyond just pretty flowers. In which we grew flowers and a family of ducks. During our 18-month housesitting adventure, we finally had a decent plot of land (just shy ...

This weekend, I tackled the coconut pies again. You may remember that my last outing. With Coconut Cream Pie ended in miserable failure. The Rationality of Pie: Homestead Chess Pie

http://pie2011.blogspot.com/2011/03/homestead-chess-pie.html

The Rationality of Pie. One man's year-long endeavor to determine whether pie is really as good as he wants it to be. I've heard of chess pie. For years, but have never seen one nor had the opportunity to try a slice. I don't recall ever even having seen. A recipe for chess pie. The recipe from Pie. Calls for baking 30-35 minutes until a knife inserted at the center comes out clean. After 35 minutes, the pie had browned slightly, but was still very 'jiggly' and my tester came out wet. I thought t...The s...

One in a series of posts about 2012 resolutions. I still want to explore pies, but I think a more relaxed goal is in order. The Rationality of Pie: Pine Nut Pie

http://pie2011.blogspot.com/2011/05/pine-nut-pie.html

The Rationality of Pie. One man's year-long endeavor to determine whether pie is really as good as he wants it to be. This will be a brief post. While this week's pie is amazingly good- and amazingly, not that bad for you, relatively speaking- I have a Mississippi River bargeful of other things to get done tonight. And to top it all off, I'm nodding off at the keyboard. The recipe for Pine Nut Pie comes from Ken Haedrich's book Pie. And I strongly suggest you go and look it up. Depending on your curr...

The Rationality of Pie. One man's year-long endeavor to determine whether pie is really as good as he wants it to be. Like Virginia Diner's Peanut Pie. Yes, you read that right. Peanut pie. Not peanut butter pie. Peanut pie. As described in Ken Haedrich's account of the owner of Virginia Diner. Like a pecan pie, only better." I'm not entirely sure I agree with the 'better' part, but Peanut Pie is certainly like a pecan pie made with groundnuts instead. Where he found this recipe. A la fin du jour. But in...

http://pie2011.blogspot.com/2011/03/blackberry-silk-pie.html

The Rationality of Pie. One man's year-long endeavor to determine whether pie is really as good as he wants it to be. For every mountaintop, there has to be a valley, right? We've been hiking along the ridge for a few weeks now with some great pies. This week, however, I think we're off the trail. This is the pre-baking color. Custard, yum. Blackberries, yum. Blackberry custard, not so much. Are we back in January? Post-bake. It's only slightly prettier in real life. Flavor-wise, this pie is okay. Yo...
