Saguaro Hearts | Desert Colors
http://mariabelgien.blogspot.com/2012/06/saguaro-hearts.html
Saguaros keep on giving. After the cactus is done blooming, the fruit starts to look like tiny watermelons. Then the fruit splits open into flower or heart shapes depending on how you look at them. Sometimes the entrance to a bird nest in a saguaro appears heart shaped. Here's a random heart on a decaying saguaro boot. A saguaro boot is the woody plant tissue of the saguaro nest cavity which remains long after the cactus dies. It's fun to discover random hearts! See more hearts at Clytie's Random Hearts.

Here are some dragonfly pictures taken on different days in October near Sabino Creek. I am learning that dragonflies can be hard to identify. Some kind of damselfly.a spreadwing. However, this filigree skimmer. Was easy for me to name since Chris at Las Adventuras. Had already done the work of identifying one like it for his blog. With wings resembling skeletonized leaves, it seems the filigree skimmer has the perfect camouflage for this wooded area. You have read this article dragonflies. Saguaros keep...

One Square Mile | Desert Colors
http://mariabelgien.blogspot.com/2012/12/one-square-mile.html
Here are a bunch of snapshots taken within the same square mile on eight different days in October:. Hover fly on tickseed sunflower. Tree lizard on bracket fungus. Old saguaro cactus - perhaps suggesting a carousel horse. Desert cotton - fruit and leaves. One day, around Halloween, part of the creek looked orange. While upstream the water had its usual tea color. Two hard-to-see katydids on Arizona foldwing. A pair of fence lizards on a boulder. I hope your week is going happily! Start Your Business Plan.

A little squirrel tail | Desert Colors
http://mariabelgien.blogspot.com/2010/06/a-little-squirrel-tail.html
A little squirrel tail. A little squirrel tail. In the Sonoran Desert, we have "Round-tailed" Ground Squirrels. As you can see, their tails are smaller than those of tree squirrels. There aren't many tall trees in the desert so these squirrels don't need big bushy tails for balancing. They live underground and most of their food is found on or close to the ground. Here's a squirrel in a creosote bush eating seeds. See how he held onto the branch with his hind foot. You have read this article mammals.

Desert Colors: August 2012
http://mariabelgien.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Archive for August 2012. Earlier this month the sky looked weird at sunset,. As if some of the clouds had been wiped away along a straight edge. It was probably just crepuscular rays. That happened to have very wide bands of light and shadow. In my sky folder, and I found these images of more typical looking rays:. On Monday evening, I followed a ray of light from the sunset in the west. All the way across the sky. To the east where subtle rays appeared to converge opposite the setting sun. You can bookm...

Venus Transit | Desert Colors
http://mariabelgien.blogspot.com/2012/06/venus-transit.html
From our backyard with our homemade viewer we were able to capture the silhouette of Venus during its transit across the sun. Then we attended a free Transit of Venus event at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort where various activities and telescopes were set up. And cultural astronomer Richard Poss gave an interesting lecture. I thought this little wooden "Sunspotter" telescope was really neat. It uses a system of three mirrors and two lenses inside a triangle that can rotate on the semicircular base. Ruby Tue...
