Box Elder Peak Trip Report

Location: Wasatch Range, Utah. Box Elder Peak is among the highest peaks in the Wasatch range, but seems to lack much popularity because it's wedged inbetween the Alpine ridge (Lone Peak, Pfeifferhorn) and Mount Timpanogos. Nevertheless, it is an excellent peak to climb.

Mount Baldy Trip Report

Location: Wasatch Range, Utah. Mount Baldy sits on the border of Alta and Snowbird ski resorts. It is frequently climbed, probably because it is so close to the tram, and it is a relatively easy climb. From the summit you'll have a great view back down the canyon as Baldy juts out somewhat north of the other peaks along it's ridge, offering a more un-obstructed view down canyon. Lone Peak Trip Report

Location: Wasatch Range, Utah. Lone Peak is one of the classic Wasatch peaks. It is one of the highest, and most rugged peaks in the range. It's easiest route requires a ridge scramble with high exposure in a few spots. The famous cirque offers great rock climbing opportunities. It's no wonder this area was Utah's first designated wilderness area. The trip down was another long one, and either Jacob's Ladder or Draper Ridge are terrible on the knees. Roundtrip time for us was almost exactly ten hours...

Mount Superior Trip Report

Location: Wasatch Range, Utah. From the pass, you follow the ridge on a faint, rocky trail up past an unnamed peak (10,277), where the trail levels out for a while thru some scruffy trees. The first peak of Superior looms ahead, and you'll see a track cutting up towards it's rugged ridges. The trip down is worse than climbing up because of the slow progress scrambling down the ridge, proceed back with caution as this peak has had it's share of accidents. Easily one of the best peaks I've ever climbed.

Red Baldy Trip Report

Location: Wasatch Range, Utah. The rocks on the upper part of Red Baldy are actually the reddish quartzite more commonly seen across the canyon on Cottonwood Ridge, as opposed to the granite found on White Baldy (and even lower parts of Red Baldy). As you ascend the face, be sure to take note of the ever-improving views to the west. Back at the lake, I finally took a good, long rest and hiked the remaining five miles back to the trailhead. The traverse took just under eight hours.

Monday, May 31, 2010. It was the warmest day of the long weekend for our hike up Little Black Mountain. Hike description is here. My first big hike of 2010. We were hoping for blue skies, but it became increasingly overcast. As a weak front moved through the valley. Nonetheless, the route along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, north of Avenues Twin Peaks and to the foot of Little Black was pleasant - full of wildflowers. Then the real ascent began. About 1,200 feet in about 0.75 miles! And a horned lizard.
