Answers to basket questions. 1 Mostly women produced the traditional baskets. 2 The baskets are produced out of splint ash wood, birch bark and split cedar. 3 The crafting of Micmac baskets requires whole logs of ash be split, by hand into sections called splits. Each split is individually sized using knives. Once sized, the split is hand pounded, separating the annual growth rings and forming the weaving strips.
