Four MCL51 microsequencer-based 8051 processor cores running in Lockstep. Four independent Voters that detect errors and silently remove the module from the lockstep. Modules can passively rebuild themselves without the intervention of neighboring modules. Once rebuilt, they can re-synchronize with neighboring modules and rejoin the lockstep in less than 1ms. The Lockstep QMR System can tolerate two simultaneous module failures. System consumes 12% of a Xilinx Artix-7 XC7A35. Quad Modular Redundant System.

Q: How small are the MCL51 and MCL86 cores? A: The MCL86 Execution Unit (EU) core consumes 308 LUTs which is less than one percent of the smallest Kintex-7 FPGA and less than ten percent of the Lattice XO2-7000 FPGA and the MCL51 is 312 Xilinx Artix-7 LUTs. These ultra-small footprints are possible because of the high performance microsequencer that implements all the processor's functionality in microcode. The MCL86 EU core utilizes only 308 LUTs which is less than one percent of the smallest Kintex FPGA and less than ten percent of the Lattice XO2-7000 FPGA. Block RAMS are used to hold the microcode. The core has the option to be cycle compatible(*) with the original 4.77Mhz 8088 microprocessor which allows the MCL86 to be a drop-in replacement. Welcome to MicroCore Labs. We develop ultra-small footprint, microsequencer based, embedded processor cores which can be implemented in any FPGA or ASIC technology. Our processor cores include the 8086/8088 compatible MCL86 and the 8051 compatible MCL51 cores. We have recently implemented an application of a Lockstep Quad Modular Redundant system which uses the MCL51 core. An application note is available under the Applications tab and a video demonstration is available on our YouTube channel.
