Josh's microlife - Most wanted identifications

In the samples I have taken there are a variety of algae, protozoa, and animals that I have not been able to identify. In many cases I wasn’t able to observe them in enough detail, or the key features are not visible in a living specimen. In others, though, I simply don’t know which characters to look for or the range of possibilities. The following images are the ones I think are most likely to be recognizable by someone more familiar with the groups in question. Many others are listed in the samples.

Insects, crustaceans and allies. Arthropods occur in nearly every terrestrial and aquatic habitat. All of them share a segmented body plan with paired appendages. The cuticle is molted repeatedly during growth, and in adults usually forms an exoskeleton with hardened plates, although larvae sometimes have softer bodies. The appendages usually take the form of mouthparts or sensory antennae near the front, and legs or gills further back. In many aquatic types they are biramous, i.e. Body about 1.5 mm.

Most microscopic creatures do not really have common names, only scientific ones. On occasion, though, you can find some types are named as different sorts of animalcules. Such as slipper animalcules for Paramecium. Or wheel animalcules for rotifers. These are remnants from the early days of microscopy, before formal nomenclature. Animals are nearly all multi-cellular with a central chamber or tube serving in acquiring and digesting food. Aside from sponges, they typically have distinct tissues including nerves and muscles that coordinate movement. Most thus act as a single functional unit, in some ways more like protozoans than complex plants, chromists, and fungi. Neck about 125 µm wide. Microscopic life is usually very similar from one region to another, provided the conditions are similar. However, this limits the sorts of things you can find in any one place. The photos here are mainly from around Calgary, Canada in the northern prairie, which is home to a number of small rivers and creeks. The weather here is temperate but cool, with intermittent freezing in the spring and fall. Particularly important is that the water here is all very hard, i.e. 2009-06 - Fish Creek - Spirogyra.
