DNR/DNI: October 2008
http://micunurse.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Truth, it seems, is always bashful, easily reduced to silence by the too blatent encroachment of falsehood" Solzhenitsyn. Friday, October 24, 2008. Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down. 8221; he replied. What about self determination? 8221; And the docs do not always get it on the first try. Sometimes it takes three different doctors and three different sites. Sometimes they cannot get it at all. I do not want to die tied down like a dog! 8221; With the exception of me, everyone in the room was laughing at him. It...

Truth, it seems, is always bashful, easily reduced to silence by the too blatent encroachment of falsehood" Solzhenitsyn. Monday, June 30, 2008. This is a Dangeous Place. Friday, June 27, 2008. As P ties the restraint, Mrs. Hardy opens her eyes slightly, as if from a deep sleep, to see what is going on. After a moment she closes them again. This, apparently, is what P means when she says Mrs. Hardy is still waking up. It is all so normal for us. Sunday, June 22, 2008. How long will this take? 8221; she s...

Truth, it seems, is always bashful, easily reduced to silence by the too blatent encroachment of falsehood" Solzhenitsyn. Thursday, September 17, 2009. Passing the Final Test. I do not remember Mr. Hardy’s case very well. I think it was a GI problem where surgical options had been tried and exhausted. I am sure the prognosis was firm. Mr. Hardy was also firm; he wanted to be allowed to die naturally. What’s wrong with you, you don’t want to live anymore? 8221; I relaxed as it became apparent she was not ...
DNR/DNI: Liver Transplants Do Not Always Work Out
http://micunurse.blogspot.com/2011/10/liver-transplants-do-not-always-work.html
Truth, it seems, is always bashful, easily reduced to silence by the too blatent encroachment of falsehood" Solzhenitsyn. Friday, October 14, 2011. Liver Transplants Do Not Always Work Out. I hear a call on the overhead paging system requesting all available hands to help with a turn in room 4. My hands are available, so I go. I join two other nurses and a tech at Mr. Jones’ bedside. I can see right away it is another liver transplant gone bad. We see quite a lot of them. A lot of money is generated from...

Truth, it seems, is always bashful, easily reduced to silence by the too blatent encroachment of falsehood" Solzhenitsyn. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. The charge nurse, Mark, headed into the empty room to make sure everything was set up properly. “What is going on with that neuro patient? 8221; “It's a dump, (on us by Neuro ICU), she is about to code.” I say. Hal concurs “It is a dump,” he says. We will need backup. 8221; We stammer, ashamed “All…All we have up here is clean tubing…”...I am pushed out...

What the Doc Didn't Tell Me: I'm Qualified to be a Doctor Now, Right?
http://thedocdidnttellme.blogspot.com/2012/09/im-qualified-to-be-doctor-now-right.html
Monday, September 24, 2012. I'm Qualified to be a Doctor Now, Right? In my last post I wrote about how uncomfortable I was approaching my GI doc regarding his colleague's diagnosis, which I believed was wrong (I saw the colleague because my doc was out of the office). The problem I was experiencing wasn't critical, so this was no life-threatening matter, but I wanted to see what could be done to treat it because I was so uncomfortable. So there - I could be a doctor! It gives me much food for thought.

What the Doc Didn't Tell Me: Life, Death and Liver Disease
http://thedocdidnttellme.blogspot.com/2013/03/life-death-and-liver-disease.html
Friday, March 1, 2013. Life, Death and Liver Disease. One month ago today, my mother died from liver disease, which her doctor said was non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Her death wasn't a shock since she'd been suffering for a number of years, but I was surprised at how quickly her condition deteriorated. My mother and I haven't been close for many years, but her death leaves me feeling sad, depressed and very mortal. Mon Mar 11, 09:08:00 PM PDT. Thu Jun 13, 09:48:00 PM PDT. Wednesday, July 9, 2014. A Not-so-happy New Year. By early December 2013, my spirits had hit a low. not just because of health issues, but also because my husband was laid off from his job. Fortunately, he received a generous severance package and we were optimistic and hopeful about his ability to find work. Nonetheless, it was very stressful. Photo courtesy of Andrej Troha. In the years since I started this blog I've posted more than once about how difficult it is to find a good vein in my arms for drawing blood or running an IV. (Usually I'm complaining about nurses or lab techs who won't listen to me and end up sticking me several times, without success - grrrr.). Recently, a really. I digress. This post is to recommend the hot water trick for people like me, who have crappy v...
