Simply a blog about insect collecting and identification. September 27, 2012. I’ve been in Chicago for about the last week. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to do any collecting while there, but I didn’t go away empty handed. I found a female. Under a stone in my cousin’s backyard. Next time I’ll have set aside some time and find somewhere to look for bugs! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:. Simply a blog about insect collecting and identification. Hi, welcome to my blog. I’ve decided to start this blog as a way to help record my thoughts and experiences of insect collecting and identification, not only for myself, but for anyone interested in insects. I also volunteer as an editor at BugGuide.net. It’s a great site with an awesome community, and it has helped me learn more about insects than I ever thought possible. September 27, 2012 - 7:47 pm. Simply a blog about insect collecting and identification. November 20, 2013. Spent about a week in Florida in September. I will be posting some of the interesting insects I found here, adding more as I have time to sort specimens. On the drive home, I stopped to spend the night in Dalton, Georgia. On the wall of the hotel, I spotted a large assassin bug,. Also in the same location I collected several kudzu bugs ( Megacopta cribraria. The only other collections here were a male. To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Aspen Grove July 2014. We started our day journey on the trail to Stewart Falls, located two miles west of Aspen Grove family camp on the east-facing slopes of Mt. Timpanogos. I was lucky to have even noticed this mostly hidden longhorn; Pseudogaurotina cressoni. Aside from the longhorn, these bumble bee like scarabs were out flying from flower to flower. A flower chafer, Trichiotinus assimilis. July 30, 2014 at 9:06 AM.

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Saturday, September 28, 2013. Awesome Beetles From an Awesome Sister. Over the past two or three years, as my passion and attention toward entomology has grown, my older Sister, Rebecca Quist, has been ever-so-kind to collect beetles for me on her own outdoor adventures. She studied field biology at Utah State, has spent a year in Randolph, Utah studying the nesting sights for Sage Grouse ( Centrocercus urophasianus. Utah, Rich County. An eas...

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Sierra Nevada, California. My name is Jon Quist. I am not an expert taxonomist, blogger, writer and most of all speller by any means, but I can feel myself moving in that direction every day. I love the outdoors, especially non-touristy places where I can go hike, swim, camp and bug collect without having to explain why I'm flipping rocks and peeling bark off of fallen trees. Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes, San Luis Obispo County, coastal California.

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Thursday, June 27, 2013. First Ten-lined June Beetle of the Year. Truth is that the Cyclocephala is probably the more interesting and local scarab than this this pretty pest, but I have not yet identified the former so I will save those for a later post (They're usually the first and last active in the summer). To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Thursday, July 18, 2013. This was the highlight for me, but there were many other great findings:. Bottom: Ponderosa Pine log micro habitat. Bottom: Courtright Resevoir, habitat. This one I had foolishly mistaken for a Cantharid, so I didn't collect it. But after a longer look at the picture I realized it is really a member of the genus Asclera; another species from the family Oedemeridae I found on this trip. Tuesday, July 2, 2013. This was ...

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Sunday, March 24, 2013. To the park and beyond. Last Sunday I had an awesome picnic with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousin at Cottonwood Park on the borders of Fresno. A couple years ago, this would be the same park that I spent many hours collecting at after school. It never disappointed, either! Going back this time with a camera in the early spring was a real treat too. Pacific Gopher Snake ( Pituophis catenifer catenifer. Sunday, March 17, 2013.
