What's the worst that could happen?
New Technology - self-aware
http://mike.wepoco.com/new-tech
As well as collecting and restoring old electronic gadgets I own a few modern gadgets. I also like to combine eras, so some of my projects mix old technology with new. Nokia N800 (top right) and N810 (bottom right) emulating the older devices to the left of the picture. I've ported a few applications I find useful to these tablets - and the earlier 770. Streaming audio to Nokia internet tablets. Texas Instruments MSP430 microcontrollers. In the photo are three TI EZ430-T2012 boards bought from Farnell.

1936 Monodial AC Super. This was also offered on Ebay at the same time as the Wireless World 1936 Monodial. Receiver, but I didn't win it - it made 36. (There was no contest for the receiver, so I got it for 24.99). Here's what the PSU and output amplifier looks like. Here's what I built to replace it. The new power supply. Top view of power supply. The smoothing chokes and rectifier. The mains transformer. A genuine 1930s article. The original amplifier design. Here's the circuit I used.

Cine projector amps - self-aware
http://mike.wepoco.com/Home/retro-geekery/valve-amplifiers/cine-projector-amps
Finding cheap single ended valve amps to experiment with is still fairly easy, after all nearly every mains valve wireless ever made has a SE pentode amplifier with a couple of watts output. If you want something a bit beefier then you need to be a bit more adventurous. Some of the better radiograms had push-pull output, as did cine projectors. Here are a couple of examples of projectors I've bought on ebay and the amplifiers they contain. Mine came with two metal 6V6. As of 20th April 2009 the amp is re...

If you're able to shed any light on who created this clock, when, where or why, please do get in touch. Leave a comment on my blog. There's a door on the left side. Behind is a control panel. Controls for setting the alarm time, and some other functions. The front with cabinet removed. With the fascias removed. The rear of the top fascia is shown here. Push to release latch allowing clock to hinge upwards. Calendar is attached to base. A close-up of the motor, cam and switch. The rest of the mechanism is...

Michael Saunby: June 2013
http://mike.saunby.net/2013_06_01_archive.html
I think, therefore I'm probably human. Sunday, June 23, 2013. It's Not For Crows - more NFC dabbling. Back in March I wrote about some simple experimenting with the. ST M24LR Discovery kit. I wound my own antenna. It this seems bizarre, consider that I grew up making crystal sets and the like - why would I miss the opportunity to wind a coil? The wire I used was Verowire, and the coil former is from the 1980s too. (12 turns on 2.2cm former). Yes, I reckon I'm going to build something gadgety into a casse...

I think, therefore I'm probably human. Thursday, July 25, 2013. Cassette is not dead inspired Raspberry Pi case. This idea for a Raspberry Pi case came a couple of months ago when I saw this. It's from OOO My Design. Other than a cassette tape all you need to make it is a few nylon standoffs, or spacers. I used nylon bolts too. On the base I added an extra bolt to create a third foot for it to stand on. An extra bolt to the right provides a third foot. Tuesday, July 23, 2013. As simple as that! OK, so mo...

I think, therefore I'm probably human. Thursday, March 13, 2014. As some of my friends already know, for the last year Kathryn and I have been working with a local architect to design a new workshop at our home. Planning consent has now been granted so if all goes to plan construction starts this summer. This is what it should look like when complete. And here's what it looks like now. I think, therefore I'm probably human. Sunday, June 24, 2012. OK, for those who have been waiting for the bat detector schematics for the #FSCHACK bat detector, here's a sketch. Here's what it looked like on a breadboard at the hack day. And here's the prototype that I knocked up in my workshop near Okehampton and found its way to Slapton via MozSpace London. So what about the component values you ask? Part of my inspiration for this change was this diagram. Sunday, June 17, 2012. OK, I'm not going to wr...

I think, therefore I'm probably human. Monday, May 07, 2012. Reflections on Space Apps. Firstly - thanks to everyone who has said nice things about the Space Apps Challenge "hack-day" at the Met Office Exeter. Yes, now it's over I think it's safe to use the hack word. Secondly I should mention that the Space Apps Challenge isn't really over. This week sees the start of global judging including a "peoples' choice" category, so expect to see lots of social media plugs for the nominated solutions. These are...

Michael Saunby: April 2013
http://mike.saunby.net/2013_04_01_archive.html
I think, therefore I'm probably human. Saturday, April 06, 2013. Raspberry Pi and TI CC2541 SensorTag. Texas Instruments have yet another low cost development kit. The SensorTag is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) key fob filled with the sorts of sensors that you'll find in the latest smartphone - pressure, temperature, humidity, accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer. See the SensorTag User Guide. And the ByteWorks blog. For Raspberry Pi and other Linux users I'll describe what I've figured out so far.
Michael Saunby: April 2014
http://mike.saunby.net/2014_04_01_archive.html
I think, therefore I'm probably human. Sunday, April 06, 2014. SensorTag and Raspberry Pi revisted. A year ago I posted some notes on my experiments with the Texas Instruments SensorTag and the Raspberry Pi - Raspberry Pi and TI CC2541 SensorTag. From the comments received it's apparent that several others have done much the same. So, thanks to their feedback this weekend I updated my ble-sensor-pi github repository. And maybe hacking some prototype space wearable tech. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Holy cow, did I write that? February 17, 2017. February 17, 2017. In 2013 I bought this 60-LED solar-recharge security light. On Amazon. This winter it failed and I took it down to see if it was the battery or not.
