Philosophy in Antiquity

Relating History to the Present Day. Saturday, April 2, 2011. Plato’s Protagoras, the Abilities of Man, and Virtue. The Greeks of antiquity were remarkable not only for being the first great thinkers, but also for the depth of their thinking. In the cruel world of antiquity where living itself was a struggle, they contemplated the unity of man and his relationship with others of his species. This manner of deep thinking is vividly demonstrated in Plato's dialogs, specifically in The Protagoras. A man sho...

Philosophy in Antiquity: The Sophists

http://www.mikeandersonphil.blogspot.com/2011/03/sophists.html

Relating History to the Present Day. Thursday, March 17, 2011. Societies evolve and change over time. Whether the causes are economic, driven by war, or merely fallout of an evolving political system, the results are the same. New generations have new outlooks and seldom embrace tradition. The Sophists helped create new currents in intellectual thought – some of which made a permanent mark on human society. What follows is a discussion of these ideas, all of which have had an impact on human hi...The Sop...

http://www.mikeandersonphil.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Relating History to the Present Day. Monday, March 28, 2011. The Dreams of Aristotle. Aristotle wrote two short pieces on dreams and their meaning: On Dreams. And On Prophesying on Dreams. In the first he presents arguments for the origin of dreams and their relationship to other aspects of human existence. In the second he analyzes whether dreams can foreshadow the future. Aristotle describes the dream sequence as “little eddies in a river forming and breaking into other forms by colliding with ob...

Philosophy in Antiquity: Stoic Philosophy of the Greeks

http://www.mikeandersonphil.blogspot.com/2011/03/stoic-philosophy-of-greeks.html

Relating History to the Present Day. Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Stoic Philosophy of the Greeks. These men served as the wellspring for Zeno’s ethics. In order to achieve harmony, man must exercise self-control by using reason to control the passions – treat good and bad as equal and react equally to both. Resist the passions because they pull the individual away from harmony. Posted by Mike Anderson. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. The Dreams of Aristotle.

Philosophy in Antiquity: Greek Tragedy As Intellectual Expression

http://www.mikeandersonphil.blogspot.com/2011/03/greek-tragedy-as-intellectual.html

Relating History to the Present Day. Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Greek Tragedy As Intellectual Expression. Tragic drama is an interesting facet of the Greek cultural contribution because the body of work is monumental. Indeed, as scholars rate the great dramatic playwrights of all time, three out of the top four were Greeks from the golden age of Athens – Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Once a dramas were concluded, the judges voted and the winners were announced. Of the three giants of Greek drama...

Mike Anderson's Ancient History Blog. Honoring the Accomplishments of Antiquity. Saturday, February 25, 2012. Edward Gibbon on The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Most people exposed to Roman history have heard Edward Gibbon’s The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. The first impression made on the reader is a prose style which is stylish and easy to read, unlike most history. Example:. The first of these appears in volume one chapter 5 where he writes:. The guard acted a kingmakers for the first...

Mike Anderson's Ancient History Blog. Honoring the Accomplishments of Antiquity. Wednesday, September 10, 2014. Social Conflict in the Roman Republic. But ahead, in the not too distant future, stood the destruction of the Republic and no one knew it. A mere thirteen years would pass before the slide would begin. It’s an interesting story of class warfare, the quest for economic equity, and an aging political system. The timeline of those thirteen years has the following entries:. The Roman class system w...

Mike Anderson's Ancient History Blog. Honoring the Accomplishments of Antiquity. Sunday, August 2, 2015. I wrote an article on July 26th 2011 called Roman Battle Tactics Versus the Phalanx, and last week, a reader commented on that post in a very thoughtful and reasoned way. You would not be able to see his comment unless you looked back at the original article, so I decided to post it here. I will have more to add about this subject shortly. Posted as a comment by M. Teague. The Roman legion could fight...

Mike Anderson's Ancient History Blog. Honoring the Accomplishments of Antiquity. Wednesday, May 6, 2015. The Inland Navy of the Roman Empire. Old boundary on the Rhine. With rivers as a physical boundary, Rome needed a naval force to protect it: protect merchant traffic, quickly ferry the army to vulnerable locations, and control any adversarial movement on the waterways. Below is a map of the Rhine and Danube Rivers showing where the Roman fleets were located. The Iron Gates are a physical landmark in t...

Mike Anderson's Ancient History Blog. Honoring the Accomplishments of Antiquity. Sunday, October 19, 2014. The Antonine Wall - Guest Post. Started in 142 C.E, the new wall would not be finished until 154 C.E. The Caledonian tribe, immediately to the north, proved to be a constant thorn in the side of those constructing the wall, and their recalcitrance would not be ended by its completion. The garrisons in the forts to its north, as well as those manning the wall, would be under constant ...Subscribe to:...

Political Theory in Antiquity

Political Theory in Antiquity. Relating History to the Present Day. Sunday, April 3, 2011. More Dialog on Egypt. As I said yesterday, in Egypt we see a revolution in real time. What will happen, we cannot guess, but if there is an overthrow of the political system, it will echo across the Middle East. I’ve come to believe that the overarching theme between people and their government has to do with freedom and the ability to control one’s life no matter what the political system. Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Wednesday, October 20, 2010. It was another beautiful day in Northern Michigan for the 5th annual Peak to Peak mountain bike race at Crystal Mountain. I have enjoyed this race the last few years, and was looking forward to it. The promotor always does a nice job with everything and the race has a good atmosphere. The start time was changed from 10 am to 12:30 pm for the elite race this year. It was nice not to be freezing at the start. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
