Francois ist ein neuer Pilot. Wir machen jetzt Routetraining mit ihm, damit er die Airstrips kennen lernt. Sein Vater ist der Manager einer riesigen Teeplantage im grünen Süden von Malawi. Ausserdem einer der grössten Macadamia Nut Farmer des Landes. Wir haben doch sofort die Gelegenheit genutzt und die Tea Estate besucht. Landung in Chitipa, Cherokee Six und Airvan GA8. Bei der Landung mit unsren zwei Flugzeugen wurden wir wieder von hunderten Menschen empfangen. Auf dem riesigen Airstrip landen etwa drei Flugzeuge pro Jahr. Wir waren noch am Tag unsrer Ankunft zu einer Messe in der Kirche von Chitipa eingeladen. Die Stimmung bei so einer Feier ist unbeschreiblich. Wer keinen Platz mehr bekam, hat draussen getanzt! Muslime sind mit ca.20% in Malawi vertreten. Hab deren Filmteam das wir eingeflogen haben zwei Tage begleite...

Morgen soll ich einen Ambulanzflug machen. Einen Patient vom Mzuzu Hospital samt Arzt und zwei Angehörigen nach Blantyre bringen. Die Piper Cherokee Six scheint dafür wie geschaffen zu sein. Das ist übrigens Ali, unser Mechaniker. In nur 15 Minuten haben wir die Sitze entfernt und die Gurte versetzt. Der Airstrip von Dwangwa liegt inmitten der Zuckerrohrfelder der Illovo Sugar Estate am Lake Malawi. Sie sind eine der grössten Zuckerproduzenten Afrikas. Flying in Tanzania for Safari AirLink. Thursday, February 19, 2009. I have been allocated a room at the “pilot house” which I share with 2 other pilots (Dan from Kentucky and Sven from Germany). It’s very basic, with no hot water, no washing machine and frequent power cuts. Suppose this is Africa though! Mit meinem Besuch aus Österreich war ich jetzt drei Wochen unterwegs in Malawi und Tansania. Der Flug nach Sansibar dauert mit der Piper Cherokee Six von Lilongwe ca. fünf Stunden.
