Nowhere to go but everywhere. In 2006, I flew from West to East. Now I'm headed homewards. By bicycle. On veggie power. In a larger map. Sunday, September 23, 2012. On the Farm Again: Shared Harvest. It’s called Shared Harvest and we found it through a series of events that was truly random, though perhaps no more so than every other piece of good luck that has sprung up in our path thus far. I forget about it on the first Saturday and leave town on the first Sunday. Sounds awesome in theory, right?

Nowhere to go but everywhere. In 2006, I flew from West to East. Now I'm headed homewards. By bicycle. On veggie power. In a larger map. Monday, January 14, 2013. Meet "Wanderer" (and it isn't me). Much like at Sadhana, the atmosphere was always a joyous one, filled with banter, laughter, and music. Nonetheless, in any group of a sufficient size, there's bound to be someone that stands a little aloof. In many cases I feel it's me, but this time, it wasn't. In addition to learning farming, he's been pract...

The next morning, his daughter took us out for breakfast. Turns out the guy was running for some sort of office. He's got my vote, for sure. WellI mean.no.I couldn't.that wouldn't be right.I mean.taxpayer money and all.you sure it's ok? Gimme a weapon too! Nowhere to go but everywhere. In 2006, I flew from West to East. Now I'm headed homewards. By bicycle. On veggie power. In a larger map. Friday, December 07, 2012. Having traveled, lived, and eaten in so many places, it's just about impossible for me to avoid the question, "what's the best place to be a vegetarian? Are tropical fruits easily available? Religious factors might have come to mind: how many Buddhsits, Jains, or other vegetarians are around? Taiwan has added a new variable to this list. I...

Yet another pack of cyclists we ran into along the way to Zhengzhou. Our Warm Showers host, Mr. Wang, editor of "Zhengzhou Cyclists News" magazine and VP of the "Zhengzhou Old People Cyclists Association." 65 and still a strong rider! As well as letting us filthy up his place, he cooked us dinner, the centerpiece of which was goose-face soup.

Perhaps, Then, Something: December 2008
http://ryanjamal.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Perhaps, Then, Something. Tuesday, December 9, 2008. Hear the Angel Voices. Christmas has never caused any spiritual stirrings in my heart. This might be because I didn't grow up in a religious home. That isn't to say that I never went to church when I was a kid, but it wasn't part of my regular routine and I was never in church on Christmas. Maybe Christmas is a good opportunity to realize how entrenched we can become in our own microcosms. Monday, December 1, 2008. Time to Put the Beast to Rest.
Perhaps, Then, Something: March 2009

Perhaps, Then, Something. Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Since I last posted about reading Joyce, I have read:. By Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt. Bastard out of Carolina. By Orson Scott Card. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress ,. Bastard out of Carolina. Lastly, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. The anti-intellectualism and blind pastoral obsession with the simplicity of peasant life wrecked the country for years, and it's worth investigating the reasoning and events that led up to this movemen...
Perhaps, Then, Something: August 2010

Perhaps, Then, Something. Saturday, August 21, 2010. Anyways, it is a daunting task to try to summarize your personal credo in so few words, so I thought it only right that I attempt it myself. Since my essay drew on the same poem that gave title to this blog, I thought it fitting that I share it here. Hope you enjoy! I believe that Truth lies just beyond the pebble of quartz. A pebble of quartz? Monday, August 9, 2010. A Fire Shut Up In Our Bones. Again, with Amos, "Let justice roll down like waters and...

Perhaps, Then, Something. Monday, July 28, 2008. The Wonder of Blank Pages. When my brother and his wife returned from India a couple of years ago, they brought me a beautiful leather-bound journal, with feathery, hand-made pages. The smooth and crisp outside, combined with the sleek, faintly colorful pages make it enjoyable just to hold and to leaf through the pages. The feeling of new books (Penguin makes the best! Others taunt me with having knelt at well-curbs. Me myself in the summer heaven godlike.

Perhaps, Then, Something. Monday, February 23, 2009. A Fall Into Decadence. I was worried that I would be sucked into spending too much time in brainless activity, but last night, the first night I had the PS3, I quit after an hour of playing and read for awhile. I guess I have a little self-control afterall. We'll see if it lasts. Tuesday, February 17, 2009. Travels in the Windy City (I wonder if anyone still reads this). Yes It has been over two months since I last posted. Shameful. The highlight of th...

Perhaps, Then, Something. Friday, July 30, 2010. Have you all heard of the website freerice.com? This site is amazing! It has educational games that you can play and they donate 10 grains of rice for each question you get right. Sure, 10 grains is not much, but to date they have donated 80 billion grains of rice, so it adds up ( I personally have added 2,000 grains to the count just spending random moments on there in the past two days. Booyah! So, do you have some time to waste? Monday, July 26, 2010.

Perhaps, Then, Something. Monday, August 9, 2010. A Fire Shut Up In Our Bones. What really arrests my attention from the speech, however, is the following quote. It speaks of a desire that I yearn for:. Who is it that is supposed to articulate the longings and aspirations of the people more than the preacher? More on this in my next post, where I reveal how I met a real-life Humbert Humbert. Stay tuned! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. A Fire Shut Up In Our Bones.
Madison in June: April 2010

Tuesday, April 27, 2010. If you know me, you know I love a good scavenger hunt (see, for reference, my first birthday at Wash U on my freshman floor; my 20th birthday with a cross-campus hunt; Justin's 20th birthday with a cross-city hunt; our wedding weekend with a cross-Madison hunt; and many others). And, it turns out, my friends in Madison know me! And an even more delicious scavenger hunt. The wonderful mind that has brought us Shakespeare reading nights and visits to the American Players Theatre.
Perhaps, Then, Something: Shark Week!!!
http://ryanjamal.blogspot.com/2010/08/shark-week.html
Perhaps, Then, Something. Monday, August 2, 2010. During the past year I have come to have a somewhat disparaging view of both the Discovery and History channel. Their names for me have long been a strong ethos appeal, and I have, perhaps foolishly, never really questioned their credibility. They not-so-subtly imply) of the Loch Ness monster, shows describing UFO sightings, and shows exploring the possibility of Michael Jackson being a reincarnated Jesus (okay, that one was made up). I more or less stopp...
