Japan has a fascinating history of fabric design. Silk is probably the best-known textile, as seen in exquisite silk kimonos. However, in ancient Japan only the upper classes wore silk. In consequence, the rural people developed homespun cotton and coarse hemp indigo textiles. These folk art textiles were used for peasant clothing and common household textiles. The Japanese don’t distinguish between linen and hemp. They have similar fibres and appearance and share the same Japanese word: asa.

Tours begin on a Saturday, when we’ll collect you from Delhi airport. And take you to your accommodation. At a local guesthouse, where you’ll meet your fellow travellers. Your first and last night of the tour you stay in Likir House , New Delhi. While there wander down the road to explore Central Market. Your first taste of authentic and hassle-free shopping. The small privately-owned stalls provide a vast range of clothing, bags, shawls, material, stoneware and nicknacks. On Sunday we drive to Jodhpur.
