Mike Pickton FMP

A Third-Year Game Art student's Final Major Project. Monday, 3 June 2013. The level is now finished. I say "finished", but really what I mean is: I'm handing it in. Did i finish the level? Let's examine the successes and failures of the project. Certainly, this is an area which would have hugely benefitted both in production time and final result, by using a more modern game engine with GI approximation (CryEngine and Unreal Engine 4 would have been excellent in this regard). Moderate failure. Althou...

Mike Pickton FMP: Waterfalls

http://www.mikepicktonfmp.blogspot.com/2013/06/waterfalls.html

A Third-Year Game Art student's Final Major Project. Wednesday, 29 May 2013. The waterfalls needed to conform to the underlying rock, so I decided to rely on vertex painting to "stream" the water flow, and also to push it outward around the rocks as it cascaded down. The mesh for the waterfall was therefore fairly dense, and the vertex colours allowed me to paint in opacity and position offset. At the bottom and top of the waterfall, a cloudy mist of water is created using a particle emitter. This wa...

Mike Pickton FMP: January 2013

http://www.mikepicktonfmp.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

A Third-Year Game Art student's Final Major Project. Tuesday, 1 January 2013. Sci-fi Vehicle pt 1 (not FMP). I wanted to make a sci-fi vehicle that showcased my hard surface modelling and began by creating several parts in 3ds max to bash-kit together into a variety of vehicle designs. I felt the rotor blades looked a bit flimsy so I beefed them up into turbines, and after a bunch more refining I arrived at a design inspired by a gorilla posture and a wasp stinger. The next step is to model it "properly"...

Mike Pickton FMP: March 2013

http://www.mikepicktonfmp.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

A Third-Year Game Art student's Final Major Project. Thursday, 28 March 2013. I've had a quick test now for performance with low alpha coverage (high overdraw) and been pretty happy with the performance impact. I've also had a go at seasonal variation for growing and shedding leaves and changing colour. All of that seems to be working fairly nicely though it has become clear that if I want my trees to blossom I will need another texture. My first stab at the trunk came out okay, but a little bland. Clear...

Mike Pickton's blog, following his progress as a Game Art student at De Montfort University, Leicester. Tuesday, 5 July 2011. My blog can now be found over at mikepicktonfmp.blogspot.co.uk. I will not continue to post any further entries here. Hope to see you on the other side! Sunday, 1 May 2011. As the assessed academic year rounds to a close, I have just finished a digital painting of Bradgate Park. I’m really pleased and a little bit proud of the result. Not trying to paint exactly what I see, but pa...

I am a photographer living in the east of England and am currently completing my BA in photography with the Open College of the Arts. My background is in traditional photographic representations of wildlife and landscape, but as I have progressed through my studies I have begun to question the ways I represent the world.

The myth, the man, the monkey

The myth, the man, the monkey. Contrary to Popular Belief Africa is Not a Monolith. Ldquo; You don’t look African”. Considering Africa is a continent with 54 different countries and over 3000 different ethnic groups. It really shouldn’t surprise people that there is no one set look for an African. These are just 8 of the over 3000 ethnic groups in Africa, and you can already see how beautiful and varied the people of Africa are. THERE IS NO ONE AFRICAN “LOOK”. Ldquo; Why Are You So Angry? Part 2: Angry Jack.

The myth, the man, the monkey

The myth, the man, the monkey. Jan 19th, 2012. Stopping the automatic twitter cross-post. It's apparently cross-posting all my tweets, even direct replies to specific users (which aren't private as such, but are usually considered as not of general interest). As such, these cross-posting tweets were probably more annoying than anything. I'll still read, but I won't bother with any kind of fancy auto-update scenario. Jan 6th, 2012. Hey look.people are still posting here. :). Jul 7th, 2011. I am in a show!
