Motorcycling Backroads Across the USA - 2009: On The Road Again
http://ontwotires.blogspot.com/2009/10/on-road-again.html
Motorcycling Backroads Across the USA - 2009. A journal of my "bucket list" motorcycle trip across the USA from the Portland, Oregon area to Williamsburg, VA and back in September/October 2009. Saturday, October 3, 2009. On The Road Again. There is not much that can be said about the funeral - it was/is incredibly sad. I was thankful that we could arrange to attend - together. Of a motorcycle rider who is in his 6th month of a 5 year motorcycle journey - taking leave from a 14 year career as a chiropract...

Master Mariner DPO: October 2011
http://dpcaptain.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Nautical musings from a professional mariner. Saturday, October 15, 2011. The Wreck of the HMS Phoenix. Lately I have been exploring old texts written by sailors of the past. It is quite fascinating. While many aspects of the technology of going to sea in ships has changed, the dangers and challenges faced by sailors of the past and of the present have not. The sea remains an awesome force both beautiful and terrible. Capt Joshua Slocum 1894. MUTINY, MURDER AND PIRACY,. A WEIRD SERIES OF. My dear Mother,.

Chaos Cottage: October 2009

Family - Crafting - Life. Friday, October 9, 2009. Borrowed from my brothers blog. Hope you don't mind Mike! Friday, October 2, 2009. Things I Have Learned. The world is not a dangerous place, but actually a very friendly and welcoming place. People are no different from anywhere else: They love their children, and want to them to have a better life than what they had. It is all most people have, where we have so much we no longer have time for family. Saying good-bye all the time is hard. You have many ...

Master Mariner DPO: First Command
http://dpcaptain.blogspot.com/2010/02/first-command.html
Nautical musings from a professional mariner. Sunday, February 7, 2010. My first command was in 1988. A 257 foot two hatch refrigerated break bulk freighter with a yard and stay rig. Her name was the M/V Sunmar Sky. She was a single screw direct reversible, with a gill jet omni-directional thruster on the bow. I had sailed on the Sky for several voyages as Chief Mate with Capt Bob Fay. Bob moved up to port captain and recommended me for the job. M/V Sunmar Sky as she appears today as the Coastal Trader.

Nautical musings from a professional mariner. Sunday, October 25, 2009. The departing mate met me on the dock. Good luck on there. He can't handle the boat fer shit. Every time he gets near the dock he does the 'Makaka Mambo'. He's all over the place.". With those reassuring words about my new captain's capacity as a boat handler I climbed aboard. The captain was an older gent with a beard. He asked me if I had any boots or rain gear. I did not. He sent me off to Marine Supply and Hardware. Once the curr...

Master Mariner DPO: November 2009
http://dpcaptain.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Nautical musings from a professional mariner. Sunday, November 15, 2009. I finally left Panama, not having fixed the sonar and not having convinced Camilo to either return the sonar or pay for it. Scanning ahead I picked up a strong target. I wondered aloud to the captain if it might be a school of fish? In Santiago I stayed at the Hotel Crillon. It was an eerie place to be, overlooking the machine gun bullet scarred facade of the Palacio de la Moneda, the presidential palace where President Salvador...
