A bicycle journey across North and South America. Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Segment 54: Coyhaique, Chile to Villa O'Higgins, Chile (February 23 - March 6, 2012). This section covers the southern half of the Carretera Austral of Chile, what may be the best consistent cycling of the whole trip. Nearly all dirt, no traffic (especially due to the general strike going on! Sheep-raising, for wool and meat, has historically been THE economy for Patagonia. Here we are entering the Cerro Castillo area. Late aftern...

A bicycle journey across North and South America. Saturday, May 26, 2012. Segment 57: El Calafate, Argentina to Punta Arenas, Chile (March 25- April 2, 2012). Sometimes the Argentina precordillera seems more like Arizona country (on our way to the glacier). Perito Moreno Glacier from a distance (photo: Greg Altman). As you can see, this glacier comes roaring out of the Southern Patagonia Icefield and ends abruptly at Lago Argentino (photo: Greg Altman). We watched the glacier for over 3 hours. As it woul...

A bicycle journey across North and South America. Saturday, August 20, 2011. Segment 41: Riobamba, Ecuador to San Ignacio, Peru (July 12 - August 10, 2011). In the Riobamba fire station, turns out one of the firemen is a guitarist and singer, so we exchanged several songs. He taught us some Ecuadorean and Bolivian folk songs, and we taught him some American ones. That is Craig on the mandolin, which he has just brought back from New York. The following 8 images courtesy of Mohamed Zuñiga, Nabón fireman).

A bicycle journey across North and South America. Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Segment 40: Quito, Ecuador to Riobamba, Ecuador (June 22 - July 11, 2011). Once in Quito we got familiar with the truly important things, such as one-dollar smoothies and all-natural carrot-alfalfa juices:. Juice bar in the old part of Quito. Some scenes from the very atmospheric historic center of Quito. This was our favorite amongst Quito's vegetarian eateries: Govinda's. Excellent ambience, generous servings of food:. This was t...

A bicycle journey across North and South America. Thursday, October 27, 2011. Segment 45: Ayacucho, Perú to Cusco, Perú (October 1 - 16, 2011). Plaza de Armas in the colonial city of Ayacucho. Ayacucho is marked by its various pedestrian walkways, coincidentally excellent places for us to busk. It all ended with an interesting compromise: the police made us move a block over and agreed to let us play in front of a church along a pedestrian walkway. Here is our spot in front of the church. Looking back do...

A bicycle journey across North and South America. Friday, June 22, 2012. Beyond "Ushuaia": no longer cycling, but still travelling (April 13 - May 3, 2012). The road to Buenos Aires starts right here, Highway 3 at the entrance to Ushuaia. Those tractor-trailers are our first and greatest hope, as we have heard rumors that with a little luck and patience you can find drivers who will take you from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires in one fell swoop. Using the bike to get to a good hitching spot (photo: Cat Magill).

Volks on Bikes: November 2011

A bicycle journey across North and South America. Friday, November 18, 2011. Around La Paz, Bolivia (November 1 - 11, 2011). In La Paz we met up with Arnaud Lavelaye, last seen in Cusco, and together we formed a plan to climb Huayna Potosí, famous towering peak above La Paz. For this climb we went with an agency, mostly for the great deal they offered: $100 includes all food, gear, transport, night in refuge, and guide service. Probably some of the cheapest mountaineering on the planet. After a nearly sl...
