Biography of the artist. Mike Todd lives in the Leicestershire village of Somerby. Mike was born in Scotland in 1964, and studied Physics in Edinburgh. He moved to Malvern, Worcestershire in 1986, and to Leicestershire in 2009. Mike's artistic training started in 2002 with evening classes at Malvern Hills College, driven by the teaching talents and encouragement of Brian Gorst, a drawing and oil painting tutor at the college. Friday, 18 November 2011. I've had a painting selected for the Midlands Open 2011 held at the Tarpey Gallery. I was tempted into buying a small study by Jackie Berridge. Whose work I find both intriguing and playful. This painting is entitled 'Birds of a Feather' (see below) also on her website as 'Lovebirds'. I think I'll know it as Spring Fever. The exhibition is on until Christmas eve, so there is no excuse for not seeing it and buying some unique Christmas presents to support Midland's artists.

Friday, 2 December 2011. Degas and the ballet. I visited the Degas and the Ballet exhibition at the Royal Academy in London at the weekend. It was interesting to see Degas' style change towards more muscular and dynamic poses. I drew the sketch below in the gallery from a sculpture - it was near closing time so it was a bit quieter. Saturday, 27 August 2011. Conte crayons and exhibition. After my last blogpost I couldn't resist buying these Conte carres. Box of 12 'portrait' colours on offer at Colemans at the moment (£8.99). They look nice in the box, however I might break them up to use on their side. No-one ever regretted buying art! Saturday, 13 August 2011. Sunday, 31 July 2011. The Four Humours Series. Completed a series of oil paintings based on the 'Four Humours' temperamental categories named by Galen as "sanguine", "melancholic", "choleric" and "phlegmatic" after the bodily humours. These humours are traditionally associated with the colours Red, Black, Yellow and Blue respectively. The general idea is that personalities should be balanced, or at least avoid extremes.
