Ink Cap Mushroom - July 2013. This picture of the Ink Cap mushroom aka Coprinus lagopus. Was taken in a most unlikely place - make a guess? It was actually in my compost bin in among the rotting vegetable matter. I looked in the next day in anticipation of something more spectacular but it was all over. The technical term is that they "deliquesce.". Incidentally the black liquid that this mushroom releases after being picked was once used as ink - hence the name. Jackdaw - December 2013. This picture was taken at 21:45 on 16th August from my garden in St. Ishmaels. It was taken on a Lumix DMC-FZ28 at f4 with ISO 100 and 1/100sec. Currently the Moon is what's called waxing gibbous - it is 77% of full and a number of craters/mare can be identified including Copernicus (middle, left) and note also the Apennine mountain range to its right and heading up at 45 degrees.

Speckled Wood - July 2013. This picture was taken on the coast path near Sandy Haven. Like many others butterflies Speckled Woods do not like to keep still - photographing is a real challenge! This one has been "in the wars" - it looks as if a bird has pecked the wing. It is a marvellous strategy - the bird attacks what it thinks is the eyes - more vulnerable body parts are thus protected.
