I have no idea what Java does anymore so whenever I receive an update the knee-jerk reaction is to go along with it and go through the update process. I mean, what could happen if I don't? When I eventually found out what the forums were calling this phenomenon i.e. 'sticky cursor', I found that plenty of other people have been having the same problem - and it apparently goes back a long way.
