Mile for Mile

Sunday, May 15, 2016. Great Bear 5K Race Report. Well, there's still some fight in the dog. Today is one of those incandescently beautiful spring days that reminds you why you live in New England. The apple trees and lilacs are in bloom; it's cool and sunny, with a pleasant breeze. The Great Bear is a local race, so I could walk over in the morning, enjoying the fine weather. 17:35, 6th place overall, 2nd AG. Tuesday, March 22, 2016. I'm starting my 2nd day in Fukuoka today! Saturday, March 19, 2016.

Mile for Mile: September 2013

http://mileformile.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 22, 2013. PF Injury Postmortem: Part 1, Descent. Log Excerpts, March- June (Descent). 3-23/24: "14 w/2 mile progression, 7.5 feet hurt/tired". I ramped up my weekly mileage to 52, continuing to ignore pain following long runs. 3-29: "14 w/ stops @ 4 and 6 to rest feet (soles very sore)". An obvious pattern should have materialized to me at this point- needless to say the fact that my feet hurt intensely after long runs, particularly my left foot, did not seem to register. Ow, ow, ow!

Mile for Mile: February 2014

http://mileformile.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 16, 2014. Last year I had pre-registered for the Old Fashioned 10 Miler, one of the staple winter races 'round these parts, only to have it cancelled at the last minute. I felt somewhat guiltily lucky, as I was not in good shape at the time, but I would have shown up anyway to "take my medicine", so to speak. I get back in time to join the pack of runners queuing up on the road. There must be 400-500 people here, the crazy fools. The two races are going off together, so there is ...The g...

Mile for Mile: 4 on the 4th in Bridgton, ME

http://mileformile.blogspot.com/2014/07/4-on-4th-in-bridgton-me.html

Monday, July 7, 2014. 4 on the 4th in Bridgton, ME. Not much to say about this one- felt good to be on the line again. I had some pain in my left achilles that I was letting improve with light mileage- but what really. Anyway, my officially measured time for the race was 23:42, for 13th overall (I clocked 23:40 for myself, not sure of the discrepancy). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). It wasn't that interesting the first time. 4 on the 4th in Bridgton, ME. View my complete profile.

Mile for Mile: January 2014

http://mileformile.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 26, 2014. Derry 16 Miler Race Report. I've been pretty quiet on the blog, which is too bad because actually plenty is going on. I closed out last year's season with the Manchester Road Race (terrible), the Gilio ho-ho-ho 5k (won it; competition light), and Charlotte's new years day 5k (17:40, well back from the winning time- I blame the holidays). I joined a new club. I started easily and fell into a rhythm, using the time-of-day mode of my watch to very roughly estimate I was opening at ...

Mile for Mile: October 2013

http://mileformile.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 13, 2013. Wayland XC Festival Race Report. WHAT MAKES Cross Country meets so special? Aren't they basically just trail races? I pondered that thought on the way home from the Wayland XC Festival, where I had just run my first XC race since high school. Because, as irrational as it is, there's a huge. Difference between the two. There are the aesthetic differences (singlets vs t-shirts, trail shoes vs spikes), and the profound presence of team scoring. Most of all, there is the start.

Tales of the Invisible Ben

http://invisibleben.blogspot.com/2015/07/new-horizons.html

Tales of the Invisible Ben. The trivial ramblings of an itinerant educator. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Most of our days will be forgotten. A disturbing conclusion, perhaps, but one that anyone reading these words can easily confirm based on their own experience. Think back to yesterday. Do you remember what you did? Do you know what you ate for breakfast, where you traveled, the activities in which you engaged, and the people you met? How much detail can you actually recall? Among the quota of days that eac...

Tales of the Invisible Ben. The trivial ramblings of an itinerant educator. Thursday, August 26, 2004. The Sword of Damocles. The summer is nearly over, and the dread is upon me. How does one plan for the start of a school year when one has no clue which subject (s) he is teaching, much less the nature of the curriculum (s) involved? I went to the school yesterday, but the outgoing roster chair couldn't tell me any details and the principal was running all over the school, a blur in orange and black.

Tales of the Invisible Ben. The trivial ramblings of an itinerant educator. Monday, December 30, 2013. The Movie Quote Contest XI: The Contest's Little Secret. Somehow, with everything else going on in my life, blogging has slipped through the cracks. From what I can tell, my experience is somewhat typical of the first generation of personal bloggers. Tales of the Invisible Ben. The trivial ramblings of an itinerant educator. Friday, December 26, 2014. On the Insufficiency of Obituaries. With December nearing its close, I find myself thinking as so many people do at this time of year about beginnings and endings. The latter weighs particularly heavy during these dark days of winter, this year more than most. The reason for this variation? I have reflected upon my own hypothetical obituary. Sailed, the Spirit of St. Louis. I suspect not, at least withi...

Tales of the Invisible Ben. The trivial ramblings of an itinerant educator. Monday, September 27, 2004. Desperately seeking calamine lotion. My grandmother asked how the year had been proceeding. She claimed that I seemed much more mellow and asked if there were fewer classroom disruptions. Obviously, with twice as many students, the answer to that could only be no. So she asked me how I deal with it. The metaphor seemed worth recording, so here we are. Posted by Ben : 6:23 PM. I don't know why. A few mi...

Tales of the Invisible Ben. The trivial ramblings of an itinerant educator. Wednesday, December 31, 2003. They Know Where You Live. I give him the money, close the door and start bringing the stuff inside when he yells to me from outside. I open the door and he explains that someone from Underwood (the school where I teach) is outside and recognized me. Two thoughts went through my mind at that point:. 1 Who was it? Was it one of my freshmen? Was it one of my seniors? I count myself fortunate it's not on...

Postscript: For those who are curious, the title of this entry is a quote from a memorable episode of South Park where the main characters travel to Aspen for a ski vacation. I actually said it, with a completely straight face, to a 4 year old girl whose mother was having trouble explaining how to make it safely down the slope.

Tales of the Invisible Ben. The trivial ramblings of an itinerant educator. Thursday, January 29, 2004. And why are you so happy? So yesterday (Wednesday) was a miserably icy day. So miserable and so icy in fact that 27 (! Teachers decided to call out absent. What ramifications did that have on daily life at Underwood High School? I only met my new first period class today. Such is life, I guess. Anyhow, the new kids bring the old adage to mind: Same manure, different sack. Why am I happy? 3 great things...

Neither fans of this blog nor people who have met the Invisible Ben in person will be surprised to learn that he (I? Damn, this third person conceit can flummox one's grammar! Mile 49.5

Sunday, February 16, 2014. It's a Valentine's Foreign Friday. Goal 31: Host 5 Foreign Fridays. In honor of Saint Valentine who died as a martyr under the Roman emperor, Claudius, I decided to host a Foreign Friday on Valentine's night and serve Italian food. Like the Moroccan night, I found these recipes in my Williams Sonoma A Taste of the World. Sauteing the vegetables and boiling the broccoli rabe. Roasted Chicken with lemon and garlic. This makes 4 of 5 Foreign Fridays complete. Last night, our first...
