Okemos Parents for Schools. Monday, January 20, 2014. Column: Asking the wrong questions. Editor's note: This column was written in response to Tom Friedman's column Obama's Homework Assignment, New York Times. Jan 18, 2014. The strategy is well conceived and beautifully executed. It has even fooled many teachers, who vote against their own interests in the name of "higher standards" that inevitably wind up being moving targets, a Machiavellian bait and switch. We had a number of teachers in Lans...And i...

Okemos Parents for Schools. Tuesday, December 17, 2013. What is the EAA? Part 2, management and finances. The Education Achievement Authority (EAA) is a state takeover district currently running 15 Detroit schools. As we discussed, the EAA has been controversial, it's instructional methods focus on use of a one-size-fits-all computer program in place of teacher autonomy, and it's results have been difficult to measure at best. What is the EAA? Part 1, methods and results,. Okemos Parents for Schools.

http://okemosparentsforschools.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Okemos Parents for Schools. Friday, March 21, 2014. A bill expanding the Education Achievement Authority passed the House yesterday on a largely party-line vote of 56-54. Although we haven't posted here a great deal about the fast-moving developments in this matter, we have emailed our list and our membership responded to speak out against this bill. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. Final vote on EAA expansion. It's not clear where this stands in the Senate. We'll update as we learn more. There are two v...

Okemos Parents for Schools. Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Mitchell Robinson - Pull the plug on standardized testing. As a parent, I sit down and talk to my children's teachers at least twice per year at parent-teacher conferences about their work in school, and receive regular updates about their academic, social and musical development. I check their homework, help them with projects and talk to them about their studies every day. I can check their grades online any time of the day or night. The only purpose...

Okemos Parents for Schools: House roads bill would cost OPS amost $1.9 million per year
http://okemosparentsforschools.blogspot.com/2014/12/house-roads-bill-would-cost-ops-amost.html
Okemos Parents for Schools. Wednesday, December 10, 2014. House roads bill would cost OPS amost $1.9 million per year. One of the issues with the most traction in this year's lame duck session of the Michigan legislature is funding road repair. That repair could come at a high price to schools. As we have previously reported, the House plan to fund road repair would shift the way gas is taxed in Michigan so that tax revenue would go into the general fund instead of the School Aid Fund.
