Page still in progress. NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit). Thomas required only 1 hour of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). In Thomas’ first week in NICU, things were running along smoothly. He was in a cot maintaining his temperature and tolerating NG (Nasal Gastric) feeds well. I have an itchy feeling that this page will be one that I may end up adding to over time but I hope not! In all honesty, I did not think that Thomas would have any issues with seizures once he was put back on Levetiracetam (Keppra) but I was a bit wrong there. I even recall saying to people that Thomas was medicated for his seizures and it’s all under control and that it’s the least of our worries. Thomas was born 6 weeks premature on 9th December 2013, a Monday at 10.18pm in Waikato Hospital via emergency cesarean. He weighed 2.010 kilo. He was born with blonde hair and lots of it oh my! A cranial ultrasound showed a bliateral grade III IVH ( intraventricular hemorrhage) and thalamic infarcts. The MRI showed venous haemorrhagic infarct affecting both thalami complicated by extensive IVH and hydrocephalus. Venous sinus thrombosis in the deep system (medullary vein) suggested (the basal ganglia).
