The Easiest Way To Get To Ipswich For Tuesday Night Football. Tuesday night football at Ipswich, and probably Colchester, is a difficult and overly expensive journey, when you have to trouble out for a kick-off at 19:45 using the crowded trains of the rush hour, which charge you more for your pleasure. Normally if I want to go to Ipswich on a Saturday, it costs me 26.25 for an Off Peak Return from Liverpool Street with a Senior Railcard. But last night, on a Tuesday it would have cost me 50.65. I shall b...

Las Palmas Wakes Up. I rose early and took these pictures along the the promenade by Las Canteras Beach. I always get up early and it was good to walk along the promenade. Note the three restaurants where I had a good gluten–free meal. I also had a good tuna salad at Max Bread, so if you’re coeliac or gluten-free, you shouldn’t starve, unless you’re exceedimgly fussy. Other points to note. The Hotel Reina Isabel looked to be a good place to stay because of its location. The beach was very clean. For glut...

Remembering Miriam... and the other victims of 7/7 - Steve Clark

Remembering Miriam… and the other victims of 7/7. Today I have been remembering Miriam Hyman and thinking about her and the 51 other people killed in the 7/7 London bombings – and, of course, their families. Miriam was a picture researcher at BBC Worldwide and I was lucky enough to work with her on two of my books. She was great at her job and just lovely company. She was on a bus in Tavistock Square, London on 7/7 2005 and was one of 13 people murdered when a terrorist detonated a bomb. You must log in.

An Illustration That Ipswich In Sixty Is Possible. I went to football at Ipswich today. The match was a bit mediocre, but the result was the right one and Grant Ward scored a delightful goal. Usually, after a three o’oclock kick-off, I try to get the fast 17:09 train back to Liverpool Street, where it is scheduled to arrive at 18:19 after two stops at Manningtree and Colchester. I can’t ever remember this train ever being later than more than a couple of minutes. Pulled by a Class 90 locomotive. Rail jou...

There’s an old saying about not getting mad, but getting even. I’ve had a basketful of bad luck over the last few years, what with losing my wife of forty years and son to cancer and then suffering a couple of strokes. So perhaps now is the time to do something to wipe the slate clean and see if I can buy off the Devil who is bugging me. I had thought about perhaps doing something like riding my bicycle to Moscow, like Carol Thatcher. Did, but she is a lot braver and fitter than I am. On the other hand t...

Ollybars At The Reilly Rocket. Is a cafe on my walking route home from Dalston Junction station and the Kingsland High Road, that I occasionally use for a small refreshment. Today I popped in and found they were promoting ollybars on the counter. So I ate one with my pot of English breakfast tea and took another home for later. At two quid they may be more expensive than say EatNakd bars, but they are very good. Too many gluten-free snacks are either bland or have the texture of sawdust. August 19, 2015.

East Of Wathamstow Queen’s Road Station – 16th November 2016. Don’t knock it, but the sun ruined some of these pictures. I’m only one metre seventy, so taking pictures over a high bridge parapet iis not easy. Shrubland, Albert and Queen’s Roads are respectively Bridges 68. 69 and 70. From Bridge 70, you can get good views of the slab track. East of Bridge 70, there is extensive piling, that probably stabilises the cutting. East of Queen’s Road station, there was little evidence of overhead gantries.
