Wednesday, September 7, 2011. Preparing the Canvas - Part 1. Did you ever have one of those projects that required you to take 30 steps backwards before you can begin? Let me try to explain my current project and progress addressing it. The first step was to correct the leaky window problem. I decided to replace the old swing-open windows with more secure and efficient glass block windows. That meant tearing out the old windows as well as replacing the "too shallow" window wells outside. To prevent the i...

Thursday, October 20, 2011. Preparing the Canvas - Part 2. Now to reveal the newly painted wall! We ended up applying two coats of Zinsser WaterTite, oil-based waterproofing paint. The first coat was applied with a large brush, and the second coat with a heavy nap roller. Here is the newly painted wall with the awful, old, dark brown color still on the floor. And after application of two coats of Light Rattan, Behr brand, 1-part epoxy paint to the floor. Here are the two images we plan on painting. Artis...

Friday, July 5, 2013. Roger Reiman - Final Preparation. In the last post of the design series, I mentioned that we needed to paint the name panels with automotive base coat/ clear coat. On June 28 - 30. We drove down to Kewanee, IL to do the name panel painting. My co-leader Ted Turner and I worked from 9am Saturday morning until 3am Sunday morning to accomplish this task! Then there is the "normal" mural gear that we usually bring to an event. Brushes, projectors, projector stands, lights, straight ...

Wednesday, December 26, 2012. Roger Reiman - Reference Images. Mural Design - Reference Materials. In our initial introduction to the Roger Reiman-Kewanee Walldog Mural Project, we were given only Roger's name and a few reference images. Below is the collection of images provided to us at that time. Our research produced several more images that we are able to draw inspiration from to begin the mural design process. Now that we have an extensive collection of images to pull inspiration from, and a host o...

Thursday, January 22, 2015. Roger Reiman - The Walldog Event. I would guess the readers following this series of posts, are wondering what ever happened with the Roger Reiman mural project? I stepped away to go painting for a week, and a year and a half zoomed by. With all the activity in our lives, we got swept away once again! Please forgive my delay, and allow me to finish up the posts for the Kewanee Walldog event, and more specifically, the painting of the Roger Reiman wall. The city of Kewanee was ...

Sunday, November 25, 2012. Roger Reiman - Invitation. The 2013 Walldog event is to be held in Kewanee, IL. I first heard about the event on our sister site, Letterville.com in mid April of 2011. Initially it was announced that the event would be held in conjunction with the "Hog Days" celebration over the Labor Day weekend in 2013. But they always seem to be well matched and end up executed incredibly well. As I discussed in the previous posts, sometimes it seems like a roll of dice that you somehow end ...

Thursday, June 20, 2013. Roger Reiman - Design - Part 6. When I was first introduced to the Roger Reiman Mural project, I was very intrigued. As we did more and more research, I knew that we had to create an extra special mural. It has been my goal all along, to create a rich expression of the legacy that Roger left behind. This is where the crazy sets in. In the early part of most any project, there is that time when you just brainstorm ideas. Things pop into your mind and you jot them down. Usu...From ...
