Cinema Freaks: August 2014
http://docuniverse.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 30, 2014. Then I was like, “Hellooooo new can of worms to be opened! This was one of those horror franchises I had overlooked prior to watching the movie for this review. Frankly, I kind of wish it had stayed that way after seeing it. I mean, how was this thing funded? My guess is, it had something to do with pointing a lot of guns at crying peoples’ heads while they beg for a little more time to pay you off for the crack they bought. Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Natasha Henstridge.

Cinema Freaks: Clown (2014)
http://docuniverse.blogspot.com/2015/07/clown-2014.html
Sunday, July 12, 2015. Why are people afraid of clowns? There are so many movies about scary ones, and that's because so many people are scared shitless of them. I guess a lot of it just comes from how strange and outlandish they look. People are scared of them because they look weird and goofy and alien to what we're used to, and maybe because they have those creepy-ass smiles on their face all the time. Eugh! The modern man has no need for smiles! But nah, maybe not. Well, OK. That's fine. But the clow...

Cinema Freaks: The Green Inferno, online petitions and freedom of speech
http://docuniverse.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-green-inferno-online-petitions-and.html
Friday, July 17, 2015. The Green Inferno, online petitions and freedom of speech. Oh boy. Here we go again. It's time for another round of "freedom of speech" suppression when talking about a provocative film - this time, Eli Roth's upcoming The Green Inferno. There's a petition now to ban the film altogether. For its portrayal of indigenous native tribes in the forest, and I'll get to that in a second. Here's a trailer:. Both of those things would be more positive and better overall then beating the dea...

Cinema Freaks: Creep (2014)
http://docuniverse.blogspot.com/2015/08/creep-2014.html
Thursday, August 6, 2015. The Internet is a scary place where sometimes your kids will go on a chat video site and see a picture of a penis. But the things that happen in this week's movie, entitled Creep, might be far worse than that. I'm not going to make any stances for or against that logic, but it's a possibility, is all I'm saying. Patrick Brice, Mark Duplass. You know what we need more of? Uncharismatic white guys filming themselves. He meets up with Josef, played by Duplass, a strange man who lik...

Cinema Freaks: July 2015
http://docuniverse.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. This week, to celebrate a review that's been years in the making, my friend Tony and I did a podcast talking about our history with this movie and what we thought about it. Check it out:. William Shakespeare is always a tough one to tackle when making a movie, because there are so many things that can go wrong. You really just need the best actors and the best understanding of drama possible, because otherwise you could end up churning out something rather misguided or silly. You'd...

Cinema Freaks: December 2014
http://docuniverse.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 30, 2014. End of the Line (2007). Ilona Elkin, Nicholas Wright. That's right – it's the end of the line, for my kindness toward these movies! Oh yeah, I said it. Let's get started. Because really, that's the only purpose this movie sees for women – to get naked and show off their boobs after acting submissive and lost. It's misogynistic garbage, plain and simple, but then again, why show women as complex human beings while you can just have them take off their clothes? Later on, she goe...

Cinema Freaks: September 2014
http://docuniverse.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 26, 2014. You'd think it would be really easy to make a Predator sequel. I mean, the first one wasn't exactly the stuff of geniuses – you take a bunch of musclebound meatheads, stick 'em in the jungle and watch them get killed off by a sometimes-invisible alien. I had never seen this one, so I was like, oh, it'll probably be more or less the same, right? Danny Glover, Gary Busey. Cool, what ideas do you have? Well that's what should've. Happened. Also, yes, 1997. I do. There isn't a lot...

Cinema Freaks: May 2015

Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Cinema Freaks LIVE: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). Minor spoilers in this.). Tony and I saw Mad Max and did this a few days later. The movie was just so fucking awesome, as you've no doubt already heard from every other corner of the internet. The directing was intense and sprawling, the settings were jaw-dropping amazing, the characters were perfect for what they needed to be, there were comedic moments and dramatic moments in all the right places. Links to this post. There are a fe...
