missing my mama

Wednesday, May 20, 2009. I used to babysit a lot, long before I grew up and had babies of my own. I spent time with many pre-verbal toddlers, and learned to listen, to interpret, to understand their unspoken wants and needs. In the big circle of life, my mom, now in diapers, is largely post-verbal. And yet she's still teaching me. When I can listen. She never could make the connection. That ray of sunlight never broke through. So I did- and then sang to her the silly song that he used to sing. And then s...

missing my mama: Listening

http://www.missingmymama.blogspot.com/2008/08/earlier-as-i-left-work-much-earlier.html

Friday, August 29, 2008. What was out there, just at the edge of my awareness? An almostness. Liminality, some call it. Something was there, flirting with me, teasing me, grabbing my attention and then running away with it, laughing out of my reach. What did they want to tell me? Butterflies, I’m listening. I’m still. You can land on me. I won’t run. You can light on my arm, and gently wave your wings, drying the dew in the sun. I’ll be still. I’ll li...But I think maybe you can’t invite the butter...

missing my mama: Head & Heart

http://www.missingmymama.blogspot.com/2008/08/head-heart.html

Friday, August 8, 2008. Today I got a phone call I've been expecting. My sister called to say that the rest home said it's time. Mama needs to move down the hill to the nursing home-. She's lost her natural caution about the parking lot,. And nearly collided with the garbage truck,. In her eagerness to see it. It's so big and loud! It would have been good for her, probably,. To have been able to finish up that way. But not good for the rest home. Or the truck driver. She has a good friend there already.

SouthQuest: November 2007

http://southquest.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 29, 2007. I don't know if you've noticed, but there's a draught going on. The governor of North Carolina tells us we're supposed to SAVE WATER, so I'm doing what I can. The best way I know to do this is to start by simply being mindful. Do I really need to be showering this long? I'm clean now- I could just get out. What if I hand-wash this sinkful of dishes instead of putting them all in the dishwasher? Important questions to ponder. Just being mindful. It's just as much about the wat...

SouthQuest: Yes, we can.

http://southquest.blogspot.com/2008/11/yes-we-can.html

Wednesday, November 05, 2008. Yes, we can. Today I woke up feeling like anything is possible. If we can overcome all our long-held prejudices and elect this man to be President of the United States, anything is possible. We can get past the recurring stumbling blocks at work, and find new ways of working together. The kids can remember to do their chores without my prompting. Maybe I can even finish this book I've been working on for so long. Yes, we can. The chore thing might be a little optimistic.

Monday, January 14, 2008. Is a constructive proposition. Gracefully spreading the condiments,. The fluffy green leaves of lettuce. Finally the two sides meet. An arranged carbo marriage. Who no longer makes sandwiches,. Is peanut butter and jelly. She has its name written. On a small piece of paper. In the rest home. So she won't forget. My daughter prefers jam. With her peanut butter. Or pasta, and no sandwich at all. The "sandwich generation" is a misnomer. I'm not a symmetrical union. I'm torn in two.

Saturday, January 27, 2007. Fresh Water from Old Wells. The title of my book-to-be. I've been thinking a lot about that title lately, bustin' it wi-i-i-ide open. I thought I knew what the fresh water and the old wells were, so I set out to figure out how I could fit them together. As I started trying to fit them, I realized that I actually. Know exactly what they were. Time to back up. Buddha said that carrying one's anger is like holding a burning-hot stone in your hand. I'm hoping that new understanding.

SouthQuest: February 2008

http://southquest.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 14, 2008. On my quest, thanks to the wonders of the internet, I've been able to find just about everybody I've looked for. I found Bill, my dad's boss from when he was an ambulance attendant in Atlanta, even though all the other family friends from that time told me that Bill seemed to have fallen off the planet. Really the only people I haven't been able to find are the ones who have passed on. Those are the true heartbreaks- the people I would love to talk to, ask them to share t...

Fertility IVF 2015 / 2016. Donor IVF: Lessons and Updates. January 7, 2017. January 7, 2017. The lessons one learns when going through IVF whether with your own eggs or someone else’s are NOT for the faint of heart. Besides the heartache and devastation that come with failed cycles, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that the next biggest lesson is patience. That’s what I am dutifully continuing to practice today. And here’s why…. OK, great news. He is not a carrier of any of the disorders that our ...

Missing My Pat

Tuesday, October 13, 2015. I wear black because it is slimming not because I am a widow. A lot has changed in these 4 ½ years since you left this earth. For goodness sakes the CUBS are winning right now! Black to me is NOT a sign of mourning…. for I wear it… and I celebrate YOU! Many keep waiting for my wardrobe to change. “When will she add some color back in” is often said behind my back. Trick, I am not sure if anyone ever noticed that I ALWAYS wore black. Around the world and back again. And now like...
