Mission of Love--El Salvador 2011: Preparing for the Adventure

http://missionelsalvador.blogspot.com/2011/02/preparing-for-adventure.html

Mission of Love- El Salvador 2011. Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Preparing for the Adventure. I once heard it said, "Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it." It's been a joy preparing for this journey! My mom has years of experience gathering supplies for missions in Haiti and Mexico, and she blessed us so much! She wasn't the only one, though! People we've never even met gave things to us to take! See how much it weighs! February 19, 2011.

Mission of Love- El Salvador 2011. Sunday, February 20, 2011. Getting there is half the fun. Thursday, February 17: the first to arrive at the house at 1:30pm was Deacon Chuck, a friend of Jane's from church- he was coming to pray for us and send us with a blessing. Everyone started arriving soon after, and within a short period of time, the living room was laden with luggage and excitement was building as everyone gathered, hugged, and welcomed the adventure! They verified everyone's identity and sent u...

Mission of Love- El Salvador 2011. Sunday, February 20, 2011. Feliz Cumpleanos, Gloria! February 19, 2011. Our day began with breakfast cooked by Evelyn at 6:30am. We had toast, fruit, refried beans, yogurt, juice, and coffee! For Yours Truly, a can of "Coca-Cola Light"! At 8:30am, we climbed into the van and began our drive out of town. We met Gloria's family at a gas station, and her brother-in-law led the way. Our first stop- a towel factory! Everywhere we go, people are so good to us! The fun wasn't ...

Saludos de Kate: November 2007

http://saludosdekate.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 24, 2007. It's been nearly two weeks since I last posted. I can't believe it! There are so many things I want to share - be prepared for a long post. So I'll start where I left off: The baby is born! His name is Gerald Enmanuel Rosario Pina, but he goes by Enmanuel. He weighed 9 and 1/4 pounds at birth and is a long baby with chubby cheeks and a lot of dark hair. He'll be two weeks old tomorrow, and I just got the chance to take pictures today. (He sleeps ALL the time! But perhaps my f...

Saludos de Kate: January 2008

http://saludosdekate.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 12, 2008. My family came to visit! After many hours of travel, my family arrived in the DR around noon on New Year's Day. The following week-long visit was wonderful, and certainly a new experience for me in travel, translating, and cooking. In short, I think the week can be summed up in these terms: adventures with seafood, beautiful sites, and public transport. Here's a brief photo-journal of some of our activities:. This is the oldest cathedral still in use in the New World. Now, I'm...

http://saludosdekate.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 3, 2008. Thanks to everyone for your notes and messages - I really appreciate it. I'm currently living in the diocese's nursing home, Hogar Obispo Isaac. I've been here for nearly a month, but haven't been able to update since we hardly ever have electricity and when we do, the internet is sketchy and slow. Here's some description:. On the battery-powered cable television. Strange mix, no? On Sundays, I've been helping out with Sunday School lesson-plans at the church. Three weeks ag...

Saturday, March 29, 2008. Give me a V-A-C-C-I-N-E! I’m writing today to tell you about our exciting vaccine workshop we just presented on Thursday. This is the first workshop where I’ve been left in charge of big chunks of the preparation and presentation of the material, so I’m particularly proud of it. (And now I also better appreciate the work that goes into giving a training workshop! So now, I am pleased to present: The Birth of a Community Health Initiative. I forgot the indirect object pronoun!

Saludos de Kate: October 2007

http://saludosdekate.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 25, 2007. The last ten days have brought many exciting things! Clinic work continues to be engaging and challenging. We returned to Batey Esperanza last week to deliver test results. G racias a Dios,. Our sewing machine isn't working, so we spent most of one morning sewing the dummies together by hand. But we're not complaining; it was a chance to just hang out and chat! One way to assess breathing is by touching the baby. Another is to put your ear to the baby's chest. It's already Chr...

Saludos de Kate: The Last Week

http://saludosdekate.blogspot.com/2008/06/i-started-this-post-early-during-my.html

Wednesday, June 18, 2008. I started this post early during my last week in the DR, tried to finish it up and post it mid-week at work, and then was interrupted, as you will see, before the power/internet went out. Sorry to be posting it so late after it was written.]. What an unbelievable year I’ve had! I really do find myself at a loss for words to describe it – but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to talk about it! If you find yourself wanting to ask something beyond “How was your year? What it’s l...

Saludos de Kate: July 2009

http://saludosdekate.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 9, 2009. This is a blurry, sneaky picture of the rooster who lives right outside my bedroom window - and who is my sworn enemy.  The first night I was here, he crowed twice at dawn.  I thought: He's acting appropriately for a rooster! 160;Perhaps he has changed his ways since two years ago! All you can do in the afternoon heat. 160;Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she continues to grow and develop. Here, a girl walks away from the local Gallera. Well, that's it for now!

Saludos de Kate: July 2008

http://saludosdekate.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 9, 2008. Well, I've been home for 2.5 weeks now. And I still feel like I don't know what to make of it all. Leaving the DR was a hard thing to do - emotionally and physically. I spent days trying to fit everything into the three suitcases I started the year with, leaving boxes of clothes and lotions and books and toys and shoes in the clinic, with my family, and in the church conference center. Who knew you could collect so much stuff in a year? Then, I got up at 6:30, and headed to the a...

The heart of each mission trip is to visit and pray over the families who live in the community. With each home visit lives are changed and souls are reached. Each year our goal is to build a home for a family in the community of San Jose el Naranjo. In 2017 we will be building a home for the Rodriguez family. Someone is waiting for you! We provide a one day free medical clinic to the community . In 2016 over 60 people attended the clinic and over 20 children received free dental consult and cleaning.
