My year as a Student Missionary: 2006-2007. Monday, February 19, 2007. We live adjacent to the small town of Campo Verde, which, despite it's size is fully equipped with the essentials of a town or city. The following guidelines are derived from my travels, in which I have noted many of the towns or cities contain these elements. She shouts, "Ven por aqui! 3) Every town has a cathedral, basillica, or church. Because of a strong Catholic presence, most of these churches hail to mary, but the evangelic...

My year as a Student Missionary: 2006-2007. Friday, October 27, 2006. Part of our lives. Jackson and Ansley washing dishes. The ditch we ran the pipes in for gray water from the doctors house to the septic tank. A pineapple in the field. We feast on them every day. These thorns torment us daily when working in the jungle. Once they grab on, you have to tear yourself loose to get free. Posted by Jonas at 8:31 PM. Posted by Jonas at 8:07 PM. Sunday, October 22, 2006. Posted by Jonas at 7:00 AM. Crunch....

My year as a Student Missionary: 2006-2007. Friday, May 18, 2007. My arrival in the U.S. has precipitated a slow and surprising descent into modern affluence. Running water (hot or cold? Light at the flip of a switch, the amazing roadway system, no cracked windshields; my surprise on arrival may only be understood with a perspective of where I came from. And so, without further ado. Posted by Jonas at 9:06 AM. Sunday, May 06, 2007. Why is this so difficult? Being busy. But, "business" can be like sta...

Death is all things we see awake; all we see asleep is sleep.". Lifetime is a child at play, moving pieces in a game. Kingship belongs to the child". The way up and down are one and the same.". I don't like this one-. The same. living and dead, and the waking and sleeping, and young and old.". I really like this one for it's masterful brevity-. What do you think? 1 Zen...

Taking an afternoon shower under the eaves of our house. A moment of joy. (*). Alex suited up for combat with the wasps. (*). Cutting down a tree, take note, I am not smiling. If you can click on the picture and enlarge it, you may get a better idea of my expression. (*). Posted by Jonas at 7:09 AM. The problem with Wasps. This wee...

La Vida en Perú: April 2007
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Monday, April 30, 2007. Lord, please help me to have patience. I know better than to get upset over these little things. I know better than to keep thinking of myself. I know better, but still I am so frustrated, all ruffled up. I'm the farthest thing from patient that there is. But because you say, "Be still, and know that I am God," I will be still. Because you tell me to "Wait for the Lord, be strong and take heart, and wait upon the Lord," I will wait. I will trust you. But there are...

My year as a Student Missionary: 2006-2007. Tuesday, December 26, 2006. Perspectives on life are fascinating, partly because of their complexity, and partly because a glimpse of the world from another's perspective tends to broaden our own. Intercultural communication must necessarily center on an attempt to view the world from a different place, a place whose groundwork is made up of different cultures, religions, and economic backgrounds. Posted by Jonas at 7:04 AM. Wednesday, December 20, 2006. We jus...

La Vida en Perú: September 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Saturday, September 30, 2006. Learning from the natives. The longer we live in the jungle, the more we put this proverb into practice: when you get stuck, either copy the Peruvians, or invent a new way of survival. Carlos and Javier taught us how to make lamps out of milk cans. We now have 8 or 9 of these little lamps made from tin cans, scraps from our tin roof, and old rope we find around the land. We buy the kerosene in town, and don’t have to worry about recharging batteries. At two ...

La Vida en Perú: November 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Wednesday, November 29, 2006. We're in the mountains. Our lips are chapped, our skin is dry, and there isn't mud to be found anywhere. In Arequipa our towels dried overnight, a task that would take at least two days back home in Pucallpa. The lack of oxygen is what we notice the most. We can't breathe! Posted by Ansley at 12:04 PM. In which we head south. Greetings from Puno, Perú, a chilly town on the banks of Lake Titicaca. (Quick refresher from seventh grade geography: Lake Titica...

La Vida en Perú: August 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Monday, August 28, 2006. Rice in Peru is available in a variety of qualities. You can buy a kilo for 1s, 1.20s, 1.40s, all the way up to 2 or 3 soles. We usually buy the cheapest kind and bear the consequences to save money. The cheap rice has an added ingredient: bugs. Every time we want to cook up a pot of rice we have to sort through it first. Beans, oatmeal, pasta, and sugar often come with bugs, too. Sometimes they are dead, sometimes they are crawling around. Do you want a ride?
